need some help guys...
« on: January 05, 2009, 04:50:52 AM »
first off i've been bowling for about 14 years now, but i've never been able to average higher than mid 200's on league conditions. for whatever reason i just can't carry good on house shots. i've tried different drillings, different rolls on the ball, different surfaces, to no avail. i actually have always scored better in tournaments and tournament conditions.i kill the pocket pretty much all night. the frustrating things is guys who kill it in leagues can't touch me on most tournaments that i bowl in. 2 years ago i averaged over 240+ in our state tournament. i've shot 4 300's in tournaments on tourney conditions, as well as a couple 800 sets. i've even asked several guys i consider top bowlers in the area, and pretty much they all say the same thing-"your just a tournament bowler." i don't buy that nor accept that. so what gives? i know it's hard to give a good answer without seeing my throw the ball, but my game would remind you alot of mike devaney's, if thats helpful. any of you guys have somebody in your area that's kind in my dame boat? any input would be appreciated! p.s. here's a link to my bowl space pics to kinda get an idea of my style: http://mmyrick300.bowlspace.com/gallery/index.one?pref_tab=photos

I have the same problem or good fortune, depending on how you look at it.  I attribute it to my improved level of concentration when there is money on the line, combined with the faster pace of tournament bowling.  There is also the fact that my ego won't let me make bad shots during a tournament, whereas during league I could really give two hoots if I make a bad shot once in a while.

well first off is the problem with League bowling or house shots? I have a few theories...
League bowling is not tournament bowling.tournament bowling you have to shoot your best to advance as league bowling you just need to shoot good enough most of the time.this is not to say your bagging but the level of competition is not the same.plus League bowling is more of a team event as opposed to bowling individual in a tourney.

THS vrs. Tournament pattern....
I'm sure we have all heard how the average rec bowler works the outside of the ball and the pros work the inside of the ball.on a tough shot you need accuracy and revs to stay in the pocket and score well, hence working the inside of the ball.to stay inside the ball you need a strong, consistent wrist position, not a whole lot of axis rotation but more roll.you can add some axis rotation from the inside of the ball but the release becomes more unpredictable.
on a ths, working the outside of the ball will give you more axis rotation and still have a consistent release as opposed to working the inside of the ball and adding axis rotation.plus working the outside of the ball saves more energy for the dry.

stopncrank,

Ohhhh i know that feeling.   When I was doing alot of tournaments back in 2000-2003, I was in the same situation.   No matter how easy the league shot was i just couldnt seem to average over 200 on my monday league and thursday I was stuck at 210 ( two different places )    Even some of my tourny friends noticed it, and I just figured alot was carry, since I seemed to leave alot of solid 9pins or 4 pins.

But I'd goto tournys and average 220+ fairly consistenly.  I figured it was just one of those things where I was more focus'd during the tourny because I was bowling for myself and not the team, and I would notice how my ball was reacting on the lanes alot more.

I've also noticed when the lanes get tougher than normal during leagues, and I see other guys struggling and such, I seem to bowl better.  Not sure why, but for some reason I just "try harder" when the lanes are tougher cuz I know i need to make a more consistent and better quality shot every time.

Anyways, Crank, I usta think hey, who gives a crap if your only averaging mid 200's but able to average 230+ in tournys and bring home the bacon!!!!

the thing that bothers me more than anything is that i've kinda heard some other bowlers that think i'm bagging! far from it bro, beleive me if i could average 220-230 i would. so when they see me post big numbers in tournaments they automatically assume either the shot is easy or im bagging. another thing is that most house's in my area aren't putting out pure wall shots either. if you throw it towards the ditch it's not coming back. i have to play like 6-7 board is the ditch. when it breaks down, i move my break point to around 10. by the 3rd game im usually anywhere from 20-25 laydown to 10 on the back. and it's really speed sensitive playing the middle, cause the backends aren't that strong.
