bowling terrible
« on: October 29, 2008, 09:18:07 AM »
Hello all!  Say, what do you guys do when you have a terrible night of bowling.  I mean missed spares, sticking corner pins, not hitting your marks, leaving a lot of splits etc.  Do you think about it the whole week until your next bowling nite or do you try to figure out how to do better, like changing ball surfaces or bringing different balls etc.  Because its the 5th week in my league and I booked at 202 last year and I'm currently at 178!!!!
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

It happens man, all I can suggest is go out and practice, i'm at 186 right now for 8 err 9 weeks and happily shot 600 the last two weeks and feel i'm rolling the ball better, it had been operator error to start the year but i'm getting out of my slump and a lot of it has come from a little practice and a little more confidence.

I would say to consult a good coach. A good coach can spot bad habits or technique and help to correct it.

There is bad practicing and good practicing. Good practice involves working on specific things to make your game better. Bad practice is bowling with bad habits. If you practice with bad habits, you're just reinforcing those bad habits and they may become harder to break.

I used to practice a lot and saw mixed results in league. Once a consulted a coach, I worked on specific things and saw better results in a shorter time.

After 4 weeks of my league, I was at 180-something after booking a 211 last year.  I found a groove in week 5 and have been cruising for the last 5 weeks with a low series of 637 (which I just shot a couple hours ago).  I think my average for the last 5 weeks is somewhere around 230 despite tonight's performance.

Best advice I can give you: don't let one bad night of bowling dictate your beliefs about your bowling.  If you think you suck because of one bad game or one bad night, then you will doom yourself to a bad season overall.

Good bowling.

I started Slow myself and i went back to practicing at lunch time, i have an alley right up the street from work. I try to think about what i am not doing right and correcting them. Last week i finally threw the ball well and got a 600 series, but lots of work to do and lots of time in the season. one thing is dont get drastic, think basics.

It happens, and the more one tries in this situation, the easier it is to choke and make things worse.

Personally, I try to figure out why I play badly. Sometimes it is just me, being tired and lacking tension and attention. If something is on the line I try to get a bit aggressive, and sometimes I can recover from a "spontaneaous" slump.
At other times I know taht I do not have proper equipment with me, and that I could score better. Then I just to play well with teh situation at hand, but I do not dwell upon low scores - esp. when other face similar problems.
I really get upset when I repeat mistakes, e g. pulling the shot on a 10 pin. But again, becoming angry or depressive does not help much - rather check what could have gone wrong, try adjustments and better next time, and never "take it home".

Even playing low scores can be very insightful. It is just a matter of perspective and expectation

Take it as just part of the game.  Sometimes, you'll just have nights that you just don't miss and all the breaks go your way.  Sometimes, you can't hit a friggin barn 5 yards away with a football.

I had been going through a rough spot lately too - somewhere between 10-15 single pin spares in one night.  I wasn't getting the backend reaction I am used to.  This had been going on for a few weeks now.  It finally dawned on me I should get my grips replaced as it's been about a year since I have.

What a difference, it was like throwing a new ball last night.  I had plenty of backend movement on the ball and felt great.  I can't wait to go back out and build on that.

I usually just shrug it off if it's just one week.  I figure I'm just having an off night because of something in my head.  Most of the time I'll just accept that I'm off and roll with it.  Get goofy and grab a 10 pound house ball and start throwing it without my thumb.  After a few frames of that to relax myself and remind myself that I'm there to have fun I'm good to go.

Over the summer, I felt very confident and was bowling great. I was making the right ball choices and I was throwing it better than I had ever before. But since starting college, I haven't had much time to bowl, other than the 1 league that I am in. It's a sport shot league, and last year my ending average was 200 I believe, and right now I think it's like 187. The lack of bowling is really hurting my timing and just my game in general. I've started drifting more than usual, opening up my body more, fouling more, and in turn, its hurting my scores and my confidence a lot.

Last night after league (which I think I averaged about 185 again) I decided to bowl and work on my timing and drifting and such. I ended up bowling about 13 or 14 games, half of which I used a one step approach to try to get my timing and balance back. I realized that I wasn't keeping my slide foot under my body, which is why I kept falling off shots. After working on that, I reduced my drift from 11 boards to about 6 boards which is where I used to be, my timing felt a lot better, and just my whole game felt better.

The one step can REALLY help your game. Susie Minshew as well as Tony Reyes both taught me the advantages of the one step and I think it's a great tool.
