My teammate last night...
First game 299 - every shot solid except the 12th, where he squeezed the ball just a little.
Second game - couldn't hit for anything, and couldn't make a spare - 167.
Last game - found it again... Spare, 10 in a row, 10 pin (flush this time) 289.
755 with 588 for two. OUCH...
At least he could laugh about it.
The sad part was that the team we were bowling (handicap league) were beat scratch by 856 pins for the night. They got STOMPED!

Funny you should mention the 900. I have talked with James Hylton about his. He said that it was really funny - all he thought about in the 8-10th frames of the last game was that this was really, really cool - he was going to shoot a really high 800. He said the possibility of a 900 never occurred to him.
Now - that's one cool customer.

As Sawbones says, your teammate probably got caught on the emotional downslide after the 299. My one and only 299 game was followed by a 150-something. It happens very often.
The other thing that's very typical, though, is that the shot changes, and the bowler either doesn't know how to adjust, or can't carry with the only ball he has.
I bowled head-to-head against a guy last week who bowled a 170 - 276 - 169 = 615. The 1st game he was mostly light. The 2nd game, he hit the pocket on every shot and carried everything. The 3rd game, he was in the pocket, but lost his carry. He used the same ball all night, a polished Monster Frenzy.
Analysis:
1st game, fresh oil: ball skidded too far, never got into a good roll.
2nd game, track starts to dry a little: right amount of friction to get ball into a good roll.
3rd game: carrydown prevents polished ball from finishing, too much deflection results in beacoup 10 pins.
Guy basically stayed in same spot, threw ball the same way all night. Bad score, great score, bad score.
Just another aspect of the modern game of bowling.

poor teammate..
i was in practice the other day
first game - 106
second game - ran 7 strikes to start the game, and then lost it. 2 of the last 3 frames were open, ended with a 224
the other 3 games were about on average, 170 ish

Yeah, i've heard about that, people bowling Honor scores, then like under 180.
