Penetration!
« on: April 28, 2004, 02:05:34 AM »
No this post is not about the California Porn industry!

This is about how to bowl high but more importantly what I think is the defining property in winning bowling today!

Truly penetration is the proper word!  Some other words I've seen others bandy about and I've used myself are the modern release(some posts awhile back about this flatter hand position way of bowling), hand behind the ball, firmness etc!

More and more when I watch Walter Ray, Brian Voss in synch last year,Mika, Steve Jaros last year, Danny Wiseman at his striking best, other bowlers when I see them performing well on tougher shots, I'm left with the impression of firmness flat wrist, levelness to the lane and penetration of the ball to the breakpoint.

Inherent in these great shots are shots that are not bounced(bump bump) are extended very level to the lane, that the hand does not wrap around the side or cup much and no letting the ball leak out to a hard dry or out of bounds to the outside.  So often when I see good to very good bowlers on tough shots I see cupped wrists that want to wrap and let the ball loop outside(usually one of two bad results as listed above, out of bounds skid or bounce). These are the problems.

When you watch Walter Ray one never sees any of those problems.  One sees levelness, firmness, penetration(or a direct ball path with very little loop to where his armswing is directed).  Very little dispersion as we called it in golf!

I believe if you've got penetration in your game on a particular day, and your opponent doesn't I don't care if you are 190 average and he's 238 if the condition is tougher, he's dead!

The assumption of course being that both of you are getting the ball clean off your hand and some revs!  He can have tons you can have few!  Usually he's dead!

Astute observations. Proper alignment, proper ball, firm and direct to break point with limited hand motion. I agree. Good eyes.

I wonder how many people clicked this link and stopped reading after the first line...

I just know by 15 minutes, someone will have a vehement disagreement.  That's how this board works.  You could post "I have a leg", and I guarantee some idiot would try to start an argument within 10 minutes....

The best guy on tour with this release is Mike Machuga.  There isn't a single flaw in his game.  Anyone looking to study this release or just appreciate it, watch him bowl.

You can see this even on house shots, one guy goes 20-10 and back and flushes, other guy looks like he dead labels it, swings 25-5 but rings some solid looking 10's. Even watching you just get that 'feel' for whats working reaction wise, it's just that 6th sense that some bowlers have.

Darn it!

Anytime Jeff posts I come quickly for words of wisdom.  This time I hoped on Penetration.

Instead this time I get..... well actually there is some wisdom in that!

How do you know I don't have one leg?  You hurt my feelings....

Sorry, but your a few days too late...

Ok, so then someone will argue with the statement "My parents named me Andy".....Try and do that one!!!  Sad thing is, you probably will...

Jeff, the fact that you may or may not have two legs doesn't make make the statement "I have a leg" incorrect.  Even if you have two, you do indeed have one.

Andy, I'd be willing to bet that your parents names you Andrew.  Possible not, I did know a guy who's given name was Jimmy.

Ummmmmmm.  Good post LL, sorry I can't contribute anything usefull.

HAHA!!  That's my point!!  MY parents actually did name me Andy...it's on my birth certificate.  Many times I've asked..."Why in the world did you name me a nickname?!?"  To which they respond by shrugging and watching TV.

Wow, you guys completely missed the point of my post....

Andy???  What has this got to do with Penetration.

Partially hijacked post!

Back to the subject(no not what your parents named you?!!!).

A friend and I were talking about it and he said.  When it's done right it looks like a person's hand goes right thru the ball.

Another thing I've said is the ball looks like it is level with the hand on release.  When problems come up the ball quickly goes under the hand and the hand looks like it goes slightly over the ball.

Friend above also says,(I agree with this completely).   "When a guy has great projection to the breakpoint, it often looks like he has a long last step."  "Quite a bit longer than the previous step."

I found that last statement real helpful.  He mentioned the bowler that does it so well in our area.  I then went to practice and focused on this last step picturing the long level step and deep finishing knee bend of this local star!
Lately do to foot pain (which I have detailed in another forum) I have been taking a shorter step.  This has resulted in less level leverage and the ability to adjust the release at the bottom.  So easy when level and projecting to the breakpoint, the ball stays on the fingers forever!!!  So hard when not doing these things, the ball is off the hand in a flash!!!

With focus this particular day I finished this practice session 225 269.  It felt great a chance at 290 into the 10th.

That long driving, level last step into a deep bent front knee.

PENETRATION, down the alley!

Luckylefty
