Multiple ball switches
« on: October 05, 2004, 02:24:28 AM »
I’ve seen posts where they said they shot 259, 237, and 245 last night. They started with my Master-blaster 6000, switched the second game to my Binford Pincrusher strike king, and the third game I went to my slide deluxe half pocket bruiser.

I’ve never had a successful night where I have switch balls more than once after the league has begun. The vast, vast, vast majority of the time I used the same ball for the whole set. As the lanes change I move my line to continue to get the ball to the preferred breakpoint.

I can’t imagine taking a ball out of my hand that I have been virtually striking at will with and pulling another ball simply because the shot moved a board or two.

Am I in the minority on this?

I guess I am the opposite and have found myself on thursday nights switching balls after every game with good results.  I guess I know exactly what every ball I have will do so I would rather grab a new ball and keep the same line rather than move my feet with the same ball.  Just personal preference I guess.

I've done this before.  If you bowl in the league as a regular, you will learn the breakdown of the lanes, and you will be able to accurately predict the change.  In doing so, you know when to make a switch and where to play.

I agree with JPR...if my form is good during the 1st/2nd game, why fish around in an unknown part of the lane?  Gotta know your balls, though.

Sawbones – But I don’t know if I am in the minority or not. Maybe it is a generational thing, a regional thing, or even a skill level thing.

In my scratch league I don’t know of a single bowler in the top 25% of averages that changes balls regularly after getting started. Many of these bowlers are in their 20’s and many are top collegiate and amateur bowlers. Everybody simply chases the oil line. They sure don't change balls when they are having success.

I’ve had many a time in this league that I literally adjusted my line some on every shot to try and stay up with the transition. I’ve moved up to 20 boards with my feet and 10 with my eyes during a session. I couldn’t carry enough balls to deal with that.

'bones, suppose that's all the house gives you?  one of the houses i'm at has no shot inside 7.  i'm not going to force shallow hits when a change to a weaker ball lets me get through burnt middles.

I usually make a ball choice during practice and end up using it all night.  It's not unusual, however, to make one switch at some point.  If I make yet another switch, that's a bad sign.  It usually means that I'm in trouble and a ball change isn't going to help.  Sometimes going back to the first one works out okay, but by the time I've gone to a third ball during competition it usually means I'd better just try to spare and stay afloat.

I do occasionally use a different ball on each lane for the night.  When that happens, it's usually because one lane saw a lot of open play before league and the other one didn't.  I keep notes on a piece of paper in my back pocket in case I lose track of what I'm doing differently on the two lanes.

It's tough getting old.  Most people forget things that they've done.  I remember doing things that I haven't done.

Every big set I've thrown (a big set for me is 650-plus, and I know I'm lame, but tough cookies) I've used the same ball for all three games.

I guess I'm old school, too. I'd rather move and keep the ball in my hands that's giving me the numbers (if I could remember what that's like...).
However, I know my equipment well enough to know, for example, that on that one shot, late in the 3rd game, the ball all of a sudden jumps and barely trips a 4-9 after a 5 board move - it might just be time to switch...

but if I have to switch more than twice (once in practice, once during league) - I'm generally in deep yogurt - and the only thing that would help would be to throw two or more balls at the same time.

I'll switch for carry and lane surface comes into being a factor.

Bowled a final match/one game in one tourney and switched twice and won cuz I did.

I would agree if you aren't sharp don't know your game and equipment used and how to use it DON'T switch.

The most I usually switch for league is once. Tournaments, thats a whole different story though.

Depends mostly on the lane conditions, how the ball is reading the lane, and how many people are playing near/over my line. There have been nights where I am able to stay with the same ball and make slight 2/1 adjustments when necessary (Monday night I shot 740 with an Animal all night long) and other times I have to switch balls by the middle of the second game as there is no more heavy head oil left to be had and I need to move to a medium/medium light ball, possibly changing lines as well.

I prefer staying with one ball all day or night long, but sometimes I can't make that happen. Luckily I have a ball driller who really does a great job making sure every ball feels the same, so switching from ball to ball isn't a big deal to me.

I have had nights wheew I started 279 with one ball, switched by the 2nd frame of game two to another ball and shot 280 that game...you have to know your equipment though.

Hey PinBuster,

I agree wuth Bones in that we are old school in thinking.  I also usually try not change balls but like Da Shiv states, if I do, it's not a good sign cause it means I'm in trouble.  Whatever I've tried, chasing the line till my nose bleeds, backing off the hit, name it, tried it and it still doesn't work.  Then I'll change balls but like Scotts33 says also, you better know you're equipment cause it can be more harmful than helpful....had to learn the hard way...
