Define "What makes the best skilled bowler?"
« on: November 16, 2010, 01:56:13 AM »
We've all read comments in posts from time to time about more skilled versus lessor skilled bowlers.

So I'd like to survey the members of this forum to get your opinions of what you believe the makes the best skilled bowler?

I'll start.

1) Repeat shots.

This is very true. The guy that finished very high in our college tryouts this year doesn't even really have a target at the arrows, he just focuses on where he starts with his feet and the correct angle through the fronts to a breakpoint.

Effy that guy sounds like me. On sport I find zero room till the end of the pattern staring at my breakpoint is the only I can find consistancy and area. This game isn't really about accurancy( except for plastic at spares) two wrongs make a right on sport if I miss in a little a get off the back more I usually find a little hold and when I wiss right and get around it I usually get the ball to read the back stronger. I guess you call that new school

Great spare shooter.

Spares is the biggest difference in scores and average for most bowlers.

Splitting boards....is it really important in many high scoring situations?

Isn''t speed control and  a proper flat release more important on many conditions bowlers encounter?

As one very good college bowler I met and league bowler also stated.  "If I can have two boards at the arrows I start to split half boards.  If I only have 1/2 board then it''s a little problem."

He averaged 236 that year with a an 8 year old Sapphire zone only and 8 years off of any type of score bowling.

REgards,

PS versatility on all conditions is for the "GREATS" in any sport great scoring on one shot, pattern or center is for the very very good!

Accuracy, a consistent and clean release, versatility to bowl multiple angles on multiple conditions, and a good understanding of ball reaction (how to play the lanes AND what ball to use) are big keys.

YES. You HAVE to make your spares to put up good, consistent numbers. Every single time I've come close-but-not-quite to cashing or making match play in a local tournament, I can think of two easy spares that I missed that would have made all the difference.

I switched last year halfway through the season from targeting the arrows to targeting the breakpoint and completely ignoring where my ball crosses at the arrows.  My sport condition average went up somthing like 18 pins as a result, and it's been beneficial even on house shots.  It also makes adjustments easier and more logical in my opinion.

people have said power jokingly. Power is an important aspect of the game. If you are just as accurate as someone but have more power then who do you think is going to score better?

A skilled bowler should be able to repeat the fundamentals over and over.  This should allow the bowler to repeat the shots over and over and under pressure.  Styles are very individual and I believe a skilled bowler will score no matter what his style is.

this is what i believe seperates the average bowlers from the good bowlers

1- being able to adjust, can you play more than 1 line??

2- knowing when to change balls, being able to read how your ball is reacting

3- consistency, hitting the right "mark" on X pattern to get to the pocket.

4- mental game, not letting one open or one bad shot get in your head.  Expecially on a PBAX shot or w/e everyone is going to have a few bad shots.. keeping them to the minimal and picking up the spares you leave is key to scratching out a 210 game vs a 170-180 game.

I see alot of guys in my 18team/5man league who average 200+ that dont have a clue on what to do, they just play the track.. And wouldnt know what to do if the shot was different.. Let alone play on a PBAX shot.
