thumb question?
« on: July 27, 2006, 05:55:34 PM »
hello i have a question about some thumb abrasions i am getting from bowling... i have a track freak that was on its second drill and has two pieces of white tape in it. iam right handed and on my thumb in the inner right side where the knucle bends is a calous and a few cuts that seem to cut into each other every week... today i just got the arsenal artillery and now i think the thumb hole is too tight because it is tearing skin on both sides where the knuckle bends... it has no tape in it... i have been told i have a flat thumb...the right side with the calous isnt so bad if i put the hada patch from vise on... in fact it doesnt hurt at all in any ball i throw.. i just want to get the aretillary ready for leauge next week... i dont want to tear into the other side of my hand... i did notice that the inside is a little bit uneven where the diffrent matterials come together compared to the freak that has been filled and re drilled.. it is smooth.. i am comfused as to what i should do... any help would be much appreciated thanks again

Do you have a thumb slug?  Those things work wonders.  If you have a flat thumb, you may want to find a driller who can drill ovals to conform around your entire thumb.  It could be a number of things from span problems to pitch problems or just the wrong size hole drilled.

I'd also recommedn a thumb slug if the ball has not got one already. Good for a much smoother exit, and the material is also easy to adjust.

The reason for your wounds can be manifold, as TWOHAND mentions, ranging from pitches over the hole shape to the bevel which might not go conform with your hand/thumb root shape.

I had a similar problem when I returned to the sport after 10 years off.

I had my old ball fitted with a new slug that the driller drilled out egg shaped where the thumb hole was moved forward on the slug to accomodate my shorter pitch.

What resutled was thumb damage and callous on both sides of the thumb at the knuckle.

I have two choices now:

1) Take a while off and let the thumb shrink back to normal and have a slug fitted or:

2) Compress the callous' in every night I bowl by forcing the thumb in a smaller hole than the diameter of my thumb. The reason is that if I drill the hole to fit my thumb 'cold', it is then far too big when the callous/swelling compresses in.

I decided that since I'm addicted to bowling, I would have my thumb slug ovaled out on the sides and use Magic Carpets. Have had no problems since
