hot water bath is harder than i thought
« on: December 28, 2006, 11:30:49 AM »
I am as of right now still trying to finish giving my hawgzilla a Hot water bath, which was much harder than i was thinking it was going to be and i will probably end up ruining the ball. I can't seem to tell if all the soap is out of the ball. I used 2 and 1/2 teaspoons of dawn, I am on the 4th bucket of strait hot water and the ball still has bubbles forming around the ball and feels slimy when i feel it. I used some waterseal tape on the holes, which didn't work. and water seeped in so i just took them off and now water is all in the finger holes. Don't know if i am going to find a way to cover them up. Any suggestions would be great.

Is there anybody out there that has been doing this for some time that can give me and the many many others out there that hasn't done this before a good way to go about this with great results.

my hands are feeling pretty burnt. Haha

Don't bother covering the finger or thumb holes.  Just completed soaking a Big Time and a Goliath, two oil sponges.  You need to wipe the ball dry as many times as is necessary to have the ball come up looking new after it quickly dries.  Keep in mind, some of that oil that keeps finding it's way back on the ball is from the oil that's on the surafce of the water.  If you'd like, try to skim the top of the water with a paper towel to try to remove some of the oil that's been extracted from the ball.  After you're done, grab a cleaner/degreaser of your choice and apply it to a light-colored towel and wipe the ball down one last time.  If the towel looks to be clean after wiping the ball down, you're done.  One last wipe of the ball with a clean microfiber towel and it's all good.

As for the hands, try some rubber gloves.  Otherwise, take you pain, ya' pansy.

If you truly want the oil out the ball, take it to a reputable proshop and let them put it in the rejuvinator, it is the best and safest method.

FWIW, I've done this no fewer than 25 times with several different cleaners(Super Clean-Simple Green-Dawn, etc.) and just about every type of coverstock(including a TEC-Death Total Chaos that's STILL a great pill with over 250 games on her) with ZERO problems.  I'm not trying to snub a local pro shop but this isn't exactly rocket science.

I've done it to 6 different balls now, some of them a couple of times. I don't even bother measuring the dishsoap anymore...just a couple good squirts in my laundry room sink. Soak it for about a half hour in hot tap water, take the ball out and wipe it down with a towel and then clean it with some good cleaner like Storm Xtra clean...good as new. I do cover the holes with some waterproof duct tape but sometimes the water heats up the adhesive and loosens it and I get water in there anyway. Haven't had any problems with any of my balls yet.

The slimy feeling is the oil.  I did a teammates HPC last year.  After 6 sessions, the ball still had oil coming out of it.
