Mop,
This day of video, the conditions were hooking more than I like. I was fagging the ball to use terms of the 70's and early 80's. The more the lanes hook, the more I like to go strighter with less hand. And you are right about my first step, after taking years off, I returned and shortened by approach to make my game easier and more compact. For the most part it has helped but I struggle and struggle at the first step. When it is right I bowl so much better and my timing is great. I guess is I practiced more it would be less of an issue.
I noticed my body position was abit to far forward as well. I have since worked on those mechanics and have rectified. It has helped me get my elbow through the bottom of my swing and definetly helps my projection.
As far as the pushaway, I have intentionally reduced it in the past year to gain a higher backswing (and still remain within 180 degrees of total swing length). I have developed a motion to place the ball into my swing that builds momentum and therefore I do not need to use muscles to attain my backswing height. The issue here is that the direction suffers abit which causes fluctuations in flare in my armswing (as related to my target line). I am struggling with this but it have gotten much better over the last year.
All of these changes are being made so that I can develop more power in my game to take advantage of todays bowling equipment. I have increased my ball speed 1.5 mph and increased my rev rate almost 150rpm while not sacrificing my accuracy at my break point too much. I can generate a 400+ rev-rate at the sacrifice of spraying the ball at my break point. But for some reason, I am not happy doing this although all my recents high scores have been accomplished doing so.
