I had always thought the slide foot was supposed to stay straight. Last year I went to Magic Carpets gathering in NC. Ron had me start turning the toe of my slide foot out. Stopped me from falling off the shot to the right when I had late timing, stopped me from rearing up when I had early timing.
If you look at your slide foot, which would be forward, you have the toe and the heel for the front base, your trail leg is the 3d point forming a triangle. Keeping the toe pointed staight down the lane gets all 3 points in a straight line and effects balance.
To correct it, all Ron had me do was concentrate on turning my toe to the left as I went into the slide.
