my center is reopening June 1st, any word on yours yet?
« on: April 21, 2020, 08:28:08 AM »
Just got an email from my leaague that our center is reopening June 1st. WE need to vote on weather to finish out the season or just call it a day and do payouts as is. How about your bowling center? Have they set a reopening date yet?

The centers around me are starting to open.  Our summer league started this week.  It will go for 10 weeks.

The Bay area just lost one of their biggest alleys, in terms of being a family-owned business, and was one of the biggest alleys for youth bowling.

Fremont family-owned bowling alley closes for good

FREMONT, Calif. - A fixture in Fremont for five decades is closing for good. Cloverleaf bowling alley is the latest iconic business to fall victim to the pandemic.

“Obviously been here your whole life,” said Owner Mike Hillman. “It’s rather difficult to be going through this right now.”

Family owned for 57 years, Mike Hillman’s grandparents bought Cloverleaf bowling alley. More than a bowling center in Fremont, it’s become a haven for senior leagues, teens and the community.

The owners fought hard when developers tried to tear it down two years ago to make way for housing. With three years left on its lease, Covid is a fight they can't win.

“You still have rent, you have utilities, bills to pay,” said Hillman.

Lanes have been silent since March 15. It’s been 20 weeks without income and the future is too uncertain.

“There’s never been a date where bowling centers will be able to circle on a calendar and be able to open up,” said Hillman. “It’s just wait and see, wait and see and try to find out what phase we are on.”

Experts said institutions going away could have long-term implications.

“I fear we are not only going to lose venerable old intuitions like skating rinks, like bowling alleys but new businesses trying to open up aren’t simply going to make it because they don't have the runway to create the clientele,” said Colleen Haight, who chairs the Economics Department at San Jose State.

“It is possible that all indoor activities where people gather are in jeopardy,” said Mike Leong who owns Bel Mateo Bowl.

Bel Mateo Bowl has been open for 63 years. Leong is devastated about Cloverleaf.

“Cloverleaf has probably been the model of every bowling center in the country,” said Leong.

Leong worries about his business and invested $35,000 to make it safe.

“We did what we feel everything the CDC suggested,” said Leong.

He’s frustrated that County Health is quick to shut the industry down without visiting. At the business, thermal cameras check patrons’ temperature, partitions sit between bowling lanes, touchless restroom doors, an air conditioner purifier, and gloves for bowling balls.

“I was hoping and praying the center would be able to survive these last wrenching five months and open its doors,” said Hillman.

Hillman read a card left at the front door on Thursday. He said he will miss the people the most.

“It’s going to be a big hit for the schools, our special needs, and the families of Fremont,” said Hillman. “It’s going to hit them pretty hard.”

Most bowling centers are family operated. Cloverleaf used the PPP loan they received for payroll. Hillman believes the government needs to do more to help businesses, the industry, survive.

I think Cloverleaf has been in financial trouble for a while now.

A couple of years ago, a section of the ceiling collapsed and it took over a year to get it repaired if I remember correctly. The rest of the building was safe, so bowling still went on around the collapsed area.

The Hillman family are bowling royalty in No Cal, so it's sad to lose such good proprietors.

i live in Washington state and some centers had been re-opening.  all 3 in my immediate vicinity had re-opened.  some even resuming winter leagues.

This week bowling alleys were among the businesses shut down again and not allowed to open until what we are calling phase 4.  some counties were in phase 3 of re-opening and are going backwards.

I have to start worrying that they wont be open for fall leagues starting in September as is the normal.

I'm in Washington too, bowling mainly at Kenmore.  I don't see things improving enough to allow Fall leagues to start in September.   Maybe a delayed start and a shortened season if a vaccine comes out in the fall.  Too many younger people here not wearing masks along with older hoax believers too, and the state numbers are getting worse.  That being said, I'm still bowling once a week wearing my mask, driving 40 miles to a Tribal casino that also has decent bowling lanes.

They were. They were going to lose their lease, but were able to work it out, and that is despite the people there trying to petition the state to add it to the registry of historical locations and buildings. They were able to work through it, but COVID really killed that place, especially as it was a safe space for kids so they wouldn't be out on the streets after school.

I'm not sure what's even left over there now, outside of the house in Santa Rosa, Pinole Alley, and 4th Street Bowl (The House that Reyes built).

There are a few houses left in the area. Manor in San Leandro, Bel Mateo in San Mateo, EA Dublin in Dublin, Granada in Livermore, Danville bowl, Castro Village in Castro Valley etc. All the ones I listed are close enough for their bowlers to still bowl leagues.

Our state's bowling alleys are finally being allowed to reopen again here in Washington, at least those in counties that are in phase 2 or higher, which is almost all.  The restrictions are: "Everyone has to wear a mask. There can only be two bowlers per lane. No spectators are allowed. Bowlers must stay 6 feet away from bowlers in other lanes. You also have to be in a league or interested in practicing for one".  It's about time, but unfortunately came too late to save Glacier Lanes in Everett, which earlier this month announced the tough choice that they were closing after 63 years.

There might not be any bowling centers left in California by the end of the year.

New updated requirements and bowling can't even open until the 2nd lowest tier and even then at 25% capacity. San Diego county is the only southern county not on the top tier of the list and it's a minimum 3 weeks of meeting the lower tier to be able to open bowling for them

We started league on Wednesday night. If you are feeling sick. you are not to come to the center. If you do and any person notices, you will be told you can't stay. Masks are not required. There is no hand shaking or high fiving. Do not touch anyone's equipment but your own. Hand sanitizer is available all over the place. We are bowling at full strength. If a someone tests positive, a decision will be made on whether the bowler was isolated to one area or if he had been throughout the center among the other bowlers. Then a decision will be made on whether to shut the league down for an appropriate time or just the teams who were in close contact. Those teams could come in by themselves and bowl during the day to keep up. They would be on separate days. We also offered any team that didn't feel comfortable bowling this year, the option of bowling on the same set day every week by themselves.

I think Manor is going to remain closed as well. I bowl at Both Granada and Dublin bowl. I. hope they reopen.  I know that both centers as of today plan to reopen. There were even rumors when they hope to reopen, but the longer they are forced to stay closed no guarntees.😟 I miss bowling I ain't very good at it, but It always helped me stay sane.

Hi Bowling Friends - It looks like Michigan is finally opening up this week for bowling.  Hard to tell if it is state wide.  The announcement was not as formal as I expected.  I am attending my first league meeting this Wednesday.  Three more after that one.  Hopefully all will go well!  Best of luck to all of you!  Silver Coach and Head Bowing Coach at Lake Orion High School Denny O'Neill
