Title: My dumb numb thumb
Post by: bamaster on March 03, 2006, 12:34:03 AM
I've been bowling too much lately.  I think I pinched a nerve.  The tip of my thumb is a bit numb.

Any ideas what to do about this?  Suggestions are welcomed.

Sounds like you have the wrong thumb pitch.

My thumb is exactly the same way.... I however was really relaxed in my grip having 5/8' forward thumb pitch.... I think it was stressing me at such an angle. My first few shots pain would shoot through my thumb like crazy! I couldnt hardly stand it so I changed my thumb pitch to zero and it seems to be much better now... However my thumb is still numb on tip but my first shots now dont kill me!

If you dont have reverse I would say u might want to try it....

I suffered from the same problem, I switched to an oval thumb and all the pain and numbness went away.

I have reverse in my thumb.   I also cheat my thumb a bit, by not putting it in all the way.  (hehe, sounds funny when I say that)

Isn't there a nerve that runs along the underside of the thumb?  I must have knocked it good once.

Hummm well maybe you should sart putting it all the way in... can you not release the ball cleanly by doing this??

We're talking a 1/4" or so.  It's not much.  It depends on how humid/hot the place is.  Most regionals are fast paced so I'm sweating, which causes me to stick in the ball.  So I cheat my thumb a bit to get out of the ball cleaner.

FYI - I routinely put it in 1/2 - 2/3 of the way if the hole is too snug because of excess swelling.  I always have a consistant release using this method of compensating for swelling.
Having said that, I have also recommended this option to friends and most have been unable to be consistant when they try it.  Guess maybe I'm just used to putting it in 1/2 way.

About this not putting the thumb in all the way;  many, many years ago I ran into Andy Veripappa doing a clinic.  He told me to experiment with this.  I went so far as to try a "thumbtip" drill.  That was no good, but there are times, like Tony, that I don't put the thumb in all the way.

Sometimes a little bevel on the thumb base will relieve the pinching.

i had my ball beveled heavy and loosened up the hole. then i use a piece or two of tape 1/2 way down in front of thumb so bottom pad on thumb is tighter than area near where the nerve is
