Pearl or Solid Equipment: Which Do You Prefer?
« on: February 03, 2004, 09:21:13 PM »
On a typical medium-heavy oil house shot, which type of ball do you prefer to throw, pearl resin or solid resin?  I have experimented with many pearl balls, but have yet to find one that I truely like.  For me, they seem to be very over/under reacting and sensitive to carry-down.  This inconsistancy makes it necessary to adjust on a constant basis and therefor makes it harder to score.  I have had some success with particle pearls, but in my opinion, they just make the ball react more like a solid.  So overall, I vote for solid equipment!

Solid Equipment: 1

Pearl Equipment: 0

Good question to ask.  Some pearl equipment does not react well for me while some solid equipment reacts to much. So I am up in the air on this one right now my start off ball is the Carbide/C Pearl then goto either my TKO or ScreamR. So I guess right now I would go to pearl equipment.

Solid resin all the way. I too find pearls to be pretty inconsistent. Jumpy, over-under, you name it. IMO, the only good thing about them is their ability to get past drying heads but......at our house, drying heads mean carrydown. IMH, pearls and carrydown equate to 500 series! LOL! I would much rather throw the slightly shined solid than fight the condition with a pearl.
Just for the record, on a fresh shot I like the 3by5 800grit matte BB. For carrydown and drying heads I go with the slightly shined 5by5 BB. Pretty much the same line for both. Also impressed with the Element(matte somewhere near 4by4.5) on drying heads. Thought it would burn early but it doesnt seem too. Hmmmm....nice.

I have never really like pearls at all, until recently.  I found them too over/under on fresh conditions so I quit using them on fresh conditions.  I have a Fuze Ignitor which I love on when the heads dry out.  It is actually the first pearl resin I have ever liked.

I am a right hander with high rev rate.  When the lanes are really wet, I go with a matte finish Crunch drilled to be aggressive in the midlane and backend.  The rule of thumb, is solids on heavier conditions playing more up the boards, and pearls when the track burns up a little so you can get deeper and open up the lane.  If the solid reactive still isn't enough on the oilier condition, take a particle cover and polish it, not heavily, to get through the heads and not burn up so fast where it wants to roll out on the backend and hit like a marshmellow.

I don't know if a pearl exists to handle what I would call med/heavy oil.  The Silver Streak Pearl and Inferno (solid/pearl blend?) might do the job.  I prefer pearls in general for my release.  I don't get a big snap with anything (except the SSP) because of my release and speed.  I also don't see a bunch of carrydown, so pearls don't over/under much for me.  Solids tend to roll too early for me, but for med/heavy oil, I'd choose a solid in general.

I prefer mostly Pearl for the conditions I bowl on where I live.

Strongish Pearls have always had a lot of places in my bag(Heat-Elite-Lion-AfterShock etc..) Control Solids like the Tidal Wave and Pulse have given me looks i've liked over the yrs too. Probably prefer the pearls over more conditions(especially on aussie conditions)

I prefer solid equipment because of the consistent reaction I can usually expect as opposed to the sometimes inconsistent and jerky reactions of pearl equipment. Solid equipment allows me to make adjustments easier and keep an eye on my breakpoint more consistently.
