my first shot at 12 in a row... i understand now.
« on: February 22, 2005, 02:50:36 AM »
last night in pot bowling, i finished off the first game with 6 in a row. next game, i strung 9 and went into the tenth with about 12 lanes of courtesy... definitely a different feeling! first strike was high flush, the second one i tugged. inside about 2 boards... ball hit solidly enough though, and a messenger crossed the deck and eliminated any late standers.

so on numero 12, i let go of what i felt was a PERFECT shot. smooth, went to my mark, same release as the other 11. i felt totally calm. the ball snapped hard into the headpin, 4-7-10 split, LMAO! 297.

i couldn't figure out why it did that. someone mentioned it was slower than the rest, and maybe that was it.

i was more worried about the adrenaline pumping me up... i usually see people washout on the 12th (maybe the feet were too fast?), or tug thru the nose for 7 or 8 counts. did i sunconciously try to compensate? LOL, i DID move a board right in case i tugged (i knew i had area to the gutter with the RPMs)... i was surprised to see the split. OH WELL!

It is amazing what little things happen to screw you up at that point. Many will mess it up a frame or two earlier.

I had a friend sub on our team last night and he had the first 10. He has bowled 300 several times before. But on the tenth shot he pulled the ball a board. It held and carried just as it had earlier in the string. But in his mind he didn’t want to throw the same shot. So in his concern to hit the proper spot he place his 11th shot instead of free swinging it like the others. The result was while he hit the spot he wanted he lost about 1 mph ball speed. The ball hooked early and left a 4 – 9 split.

The hardest part is to let go and trust what has been happening. You have to believe it is your time and destiny is on your side and simply let it fly. If you do that then all the carry and all the room you have had the whole game will still be there.

LOL - I saw the really fun thing Sunday.  In the little Baker tournament that I bowled in we had the front 9 one game.  I'd been spraying the ball so we agreed that Alex (who has multiple 300's and an 800 [I think], and has been in a lot of pressure situations, was selected.  He also stated that he was lined in pretty good.  Off his hand it was at best a 6-7, ended up a 3-6-7-10.  I intend to make it my life's work to see that Alex never lives this one down.

But it is interesting that, even in a non-event like this Baker tourney, a well seasoned, good player, can still get the willies.  While it would have been cool to get a Baker 300, it's almost as good to now have Alex on the ropes.

Rags – And in your case not only do you have your own demons but the additional pressure of not letting your teammates down.
