What type of drilling did I get?
« on: May 03, 2003, 12:06:16 AM »
As many of you may or may not know, I recently purchased and had drilled my very first ball (quite exciting!).  It's a Scout Reactive polished with 2-3" pin.  I took it in to get it drilled, and while the pro shop guy was very knowledgeable and helpful, I didn't really ask what type of drilling he was gonna set me up with.  I just told him that I wanted fingertip and had previously only thrown house equipment, so I'm guessing that he mad a few assumptions about how to drill it.  I don't have a problem at all with this since I've only been bowling since January, but I'm curious as to how he drilled the sucker.  He told me it was set up to give a nice hook.

What I know:

drilled with the label in my palm.  (is this what is termed label drilling?)

center of ring finger hole is slightly above punch mark that marks the pin.  (I'd say the bottom of that finger hole is about in line with the center of th e pin punch.)

thumb hole is not quite centered below the label.

Beyond that I'm pretty clueless.  Anybody know how this setup should work for me?  I was in a hurry and haven't had a chance to toss it yet.  Hopefully I'll be able to get out tonight and give it a few rolls, but the checking account might say otherwise.

So if my preferred line is up the 10th board, will this reaction be pretty workable for me?

Bob7--
Is your parrot dead, or is he just resting?  Perhaps pining for the fjords?

pretty sure that we've just got a tophat at the local house with pretty light oil.  I have medium ball speed, probably medium revs too.  Definitely not a power player.

Thanks, Bob.  Being so new to bowling I don't feel like it's the end of the world if I have to adjust my style.  Just wanna get that footwork down and feel some consistency, then I'll go from there.

Shiv,

I believe it is dead. See how it is nailed to its perch? He needs to get some talking slugs instead.

Rodimus this is your first ball, the driller usually set up a label drilling for people who are just starting out. This is so they can establisch the positive axis point. This ball is probably not set up to your true leverage point because the driller didn't know where is would be.

This ball should give a nice even roll and get down the lane pretty well. There are plenty of other pieces of equipment and drillings, most of which hook more. Learn to roll this ball and establish your positive axis point. When you are ready for another ball, just give us a post and you will get plenty of responses for what you should get next.

Best of luck.
Jim

Um...the scout is a three piece ball....pin doesn't matter.

Why does Columbia sell Scouts with multiple pin locations?  I'm not trying to argue, and I completely believe you.  I'm just wondering what effect pin location has on a ball.

Thanks for the advice everyone.  I'm really excited about finally getting more serious about my bowling.  Hopefully my background in golf - another notorious muscle memory and adjustment game - will help me out as I get better.

Rodimus,

I believe the punch mark that you are talking about is not where the pin location is but the cg(center of gravity).  The cg is marked with a small punch mark and the pin is marked with a round circle of any color.  Pin location is very important on the reaction of the ball.  It does sound like a label drill with a very small amount of side weight to help give the ball a smooth small hook.  Is the pin above and between the 2 fingers holes?

Just my thoughts,
revs up 4x4
