My goal for this season. What do you guys think?
« on: September 09, 2004, 07:44:55 AM »
Hey all,
I begin my fall league this Saturday, and Im happy to say that I've never looked forward to a season as much as I do this year. A big reason for this is my improvement over the past year. I've improved upon both the mental and physical aspects of the game. I began to hook the ball and became more accurate at shooting for strikes as well as spares. I've also improved upon my knowledge of the game and have learned to adjust to different conditions. Most of last season I averaged around the 140 mark. After a midseason switch in balls and style, I have become greatly improved. I'm striking more often and have become very solid at picking spares. I had a 144 average with 4 weeks remaining. In the last month I pulled my average up to 150. 6 pins in 4 weeks is a pretty good acomplishment for any bowler, especially for me. My average of 150 was my goal for the season, and I was happy to achieve it. I had a decent summer no tap league averaging somewhere around 215. My goal for this season is to reach a 180 average. What do you guys think? Is 30 pins of improvement too hard to reach in one year? Who thinks I can do it? Who thinks I'm crazy? Feel free to respond and lemme know what you think of my goal for this year.

It's certainly possible;  every year, I see people improving 30 or more pins in a season.

What is your plan for achieving that goal?  Does it include practice and/or coaching?

Last year I practiced around 2-3 times a week, I'm hoping to do the same this year, but it will be difficult with me being away at college this year.

It's ambitious, thats for sure.  Remember you are shooting for 30 pins a game, and 90 pins per series.  Thats a high mark, but its not impossible.  Just don't be discouraged if things aren't looking good or you hit a slump.  Focus most on making as many spares as possible, and bieng consistent.  Making spares is the best average increasing thing there is.

Even if your book average at the end of the year isn't 180, see how much more consistent you are and really look for ways you know you need to improve.

When I was starting out, I jumped from 101 to 140 in a year. Jumped to 158 the following year.... it can be done!! I've also dropped from 195 to 175 in a year, but that was due to a knee injury...

I would check into a bowling class at college, most schools have a course that teaches the fundamentals. Might as well get some practice and lessons while a school. This is assuming you don't already have too heavy a class load and they will allow you to start a bit late. One other bonus is you may be able to get reduced rates in the local bowling center because you are in the class. My home center gives them a reduced rate anyway.

Personally I think that is a great goal.  Its high enough that you will really have to work to attain it, BUT it's not so high as to be unattainable.

How about setting some intermediate goals, something to look forward to each night.  Example, always hitting the head pin on the first ball, or not missing a single pin spare.  Really just pick something that is holding your game back and improve on it each week.

Make sure to keep us updated on your progress.  It's always refreshing to hear from the beginners, makes be remember why I love this game.
