AMF management here at a Northern California AMF center has decided that the junior program does not need a director, so they fired him.  The parents were so upset, the entire Saturday morning junior program moved to a nearby non-AMF center. I have always thought of the Junior Director as the person who organizes and gives direction to the program, informs the Parents and the Kids of Junior Bowling News and Tournaments, and handles the ever-increasing amounts of paperwork that the local USBC association requires.

AMF management also decided to enforce their “No Outside Food” policy in AMF centers region wide.  For over 50 years, many of the centers in Northern California, Oregon, and Nevada have travel league clubs where the host club would provide a light meal or snacks to the visiting club before and during the competition.  This must stop according to management.  They have also told all of the leagues that the end of season potluck that is a tradition in most leagues cannot be held.  AMF managment has said that they are in the "Restaurant" business and that this would cut into their revenue.  They also stated that they were trying to avoid lawsuits in case anyone got sick.  What is interesting is that they will allow outside Birthday Cakes for their birthday party business.

As a result of these actions, I am asking everyone I know who bowls at an AMF center to boycott the snack bars.  Hopefully if their overall revenue drops, they will realize that they are in the Bowling business and that they need to treat bowlers with respect as any other successful business would treat their customers.

Our house follows generally the same policy except for birthday parties, and also on holidays (Thanksgiving, Xmas) we can bring food in for a holiday spread. I've also seen spreads for the last night of winter leagues.

Our AMF center usually enforces the no outside food ban, but with some exceptions such as the pro shop (which is independently owned and rents space from the alley). However, the food at the snack bar seems to be acceptable to those who patronize it, I never have tried anything except the root beer, which I drink all the time when I am bowling.

And, the general manager is a good bowler, averages about 220 or so. (I have bowled in a doubles tournament with him, which we won!).

Never take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

In most states there are strict policies from the Dept. of Health about what
can be legally given to others.  All items have to be properly packaged and
inspected.  By allowing outsiders to bring in food, it puts the Bowling
Center in a responsible position.  Most people think that this is ridiculous,
however, it is enforceable.

One of the centers I bowled in explained the whole reasoning for no outside food.
1. The health department is pretty strict about it.
2. They have a restaurant (a good one, too, in this case).
3. They allow birthday cakes - as long as they are PROFESSIONALLY BAKED - either from the grocery store or bakery. No home made stuff - see number 1 above.
