suggestions for the burnt shot
« on: July 07, 2009, 12:53:02 AM »
i need to get something in my bag that i can throw when lanes are burnt up or when im on drier or shorter patterns. i was thinking somewhere between the visionary ogre urethane, 900 global lunatic, storm natural, avalanche slide, track 505c, or the Freeze?

The urethane balls can be a good choice for truly burnt lanes.  I'd venture to guess that the Ogre or the Natural would both fit the bill.

I personally prefer to use reactive resins, even on burnt lanes.  Of the balls listed, the Avalanche Slide is probably the only one that would give you a decent look on burnt lanes.  The Lunatic, 505c, and the Freeze are better suited for medium to medium light oil...not burnt.

I just drilled a Natural, and I love it! It fills two places in my bag as it doubles as one of the best spare balls I've owned. I have only used it for 16 games in two different houses, but believe it is a great investment! It hooks, but is SMOOTH! It allows me to play where I can't with my other balls, generally about 5 boards right and straight up.When I throw it well, I either strike,7 pin,or 10 pin. And those aren't bad things on a tough or burnt up shot. For me, this fills that spot all those entry level and weak reactives just didn't work in. I think Storm did a great job on the new coverstock,as it does get length through the heads better than old style urethanes. After that it goes into one of the smoothest, gentle, most controllable arcs I've ever seen! As someone else said, there is no snap in this ball.

Another vote for the Avalanche Slide.

Whichever one you go with the key, in my opinion, is to learn to "unrev" the ball. Less revs and a free arm swing can get the ball to push down lane easily. The other advantage with fewer revs on a burnt pattern is that the ball can still hit and carry well.

Maybe a different drilling would be an order. I have a Ravage VII. Drilled with the fingers set so that their is one on each side of the CG and the MB is swung out about 4 1/2 to 5inches. this puts the pin distance at around 5-6inches for me. All this thing does is skate! It is great when things are torched! Even cheetah has to much juice for this ball until it breaks down quite a bit.

Just something to consider, and I am getting this reaction from a ball that under normal circumstances with a more standard drill pattern would be muct stronger than any of the stuff mentioned above!
