my one month experiment
« on: February 17, 2004, 11:49:37 PM »
4 weeks ago i decided 6 balls was just too many to be taking into leagues, so i took my favorite and most versatile ball, my Track Crunchtime along with my spare ball into every league (i bowl in 3 and sub in a 4th fulltime) so we are talking 4 nights a week for the last month of leagues using just my crunchtime.

here are my beginning averages before i started my experiment

Monday-207
Tuesday-207
Thursday-216
Friday-218

After a month of bowling my averages are now
Monday-211
Tuesday-209
Thursday-219
Friday-223

I haven't thrown the ball remarkably better, and this far into the season these are some pretty hefty gains in average. The biggest things is instead of relying on equipment and praying to find the right ball to give myself area instead i've found myself adjusting alot more, changing speeds, hand positions, angles, loft, and many other things. I've also avoided the ball switch every 2-3 frames i've been prone to when i don't like my reaction i will go thru equipment very quickly hoping to find lightning in a bottle.

This year i've become very equipment needy whereas last yr i was proud of the fact i could play any board on the lane, and i found myself taking 8 balls into leagues at times so i could play around 15 on any condition and somewhat got locked into this.

Just a suggestion for some people, unless your houses are DRASTICALLY different week to week, i've found i only need one ball to score and a spare ball. It takes the guess work out of it, here is your ball find a line with it. Plus we are bowling on walls, nothing close to resembling a tough condition, we should as good bowlers be able to take a mid line ball and be able to hit the pocket and score with it.

just thought people might be interested in hearing the results, post comments and thoughts

It is  slippery slope when you deceide a ball needs to hook 2 more boards so you can carry better, instead of changing line/speed/loft/release you grab a ball.

then you start to think, hey if I had xxx ball  drilled X x X with xxx grit finish..... I could carry that single pin!

or was that just me

Monday I stayed with one ball all night and shot my highest series.

from now on I bring 3 balls. One particle, one resin and one plastic. I will pick 1 ball to start with and use that ball as long as I can adjust and stand between 25 and 5. if I have to move in that deep, a weaker ball would be nice to keep me around my comfort zone.

Ahhh sure must be nice bieng a lefty!

Actually, I perfer to use the same ball over and over again through all the games.  If I make a ball change, its during practice when I find the shot is completely different than normal and is super long, or super short.  I like having a versitile ball I can make adjustments, rather than going between different balls and playing head games with myself

Good for you Game!

I also agree that too many bowlers change too fast(some are my teammates!) without using what I call their natural talent.  On top of a ball change for just a minor adjustment that could've been done, if you don't know your equipment extremely well, it'll take you another 4 frames to get somewhat lined up, well, there goes four frames already and now you have to punch just to shoot 200.  Glad to hear from some who can trust the real reason they are good bowlers, it's not all about equipment all the time.

Game in a Box - you better be careful letting this cat out of the bag!  The ball manufacturers will send Hired Goons to come after you if their sales drop from people figuring out they can bowl better with just one or two balls by making simple adjustments!  You might have just ruined 18 months of hard work by their marketing staff! LOL.

nah i still own way too many bowling balls as is and i take them to tournaments of course, but for leagues it just got to the point i was sick of taking 6 in and shooting mediocure i figured i could shoot the same score with any medium range ball i had.

like this weekend im bowling in the Akron open, i will be taking 10 in, but when you drop 125 just to get in the door, and we know it isn't gunna be a wall, i will go in prepared.

The two houses my averages are low at i think switching balls and taking arsenals in has killed those averages, both houses don't cater to my game i need to go straighter up the boards so i find myself always switching balls to find something more comfortable.

Since i went to this one ball approach i haven't shot under 680 in both of those houses, i just accepted what i am given, i need to play straighter.

While I am just now beginning to acquire my arsenal (I'm at 3 with 1 coming), I don't always switch to react to lane conditions.  Sometimes, if my rythm is off with my 15# Sonic X, I'll go to my 16# Truck -- just to get the timing back.  Once I've smoothed out the wrinkle, I go back to the Sonic.  Of course my score might suffer, but at this point, I'm more worried about my technique than building up my average.
