My PTQ adventure......
« on: March 01, 2006, 12:32:44 PM »
well, as alot of you know, I bowled the PTQ in akron today. It was exciting, disapointing, humbling, and educational all in one! Once again at first, my nerves got the best of me. When I get nervous, i get fast feet. When you have fast feet and are trying to throw it slow, well, lets just say it's not a good combination. I threw mostly the Arsenal Artillery, and the Machine a little bit. I didn't take anything with me that wasn't polished, and that was a BAD choice on my part. The Shark pattern today played tighter than normal(so i'm told). The lanes did open up later in the day, and I was able to get a little going. It seemed as though I'd throw 3 or 4 in a row, them throw a split. The second game was the worst, where I left 5 splits. I crossed with none other than Jeff Carter. I give him HIGH PROPS!!! Jeff, you threw it well today, and I hope it continues for you like that all week!! Watching Jennifer Petrick shoot 300 to start the day and Kelly Kulich make a charge at the end only to fall a few sticks short was exciting also. There world IS the real world when it comes to bowling, not the fantasy that most of us live in.

Anyway, here are the scores:

172
147
205
201
178
203
182

If you have any questions about today, shoot me a message! Thanks for everyones support!!

What made you bring all polished stuff?

Just curious...

from what i'd read on the pattern, it was quite aggressive. Bad on my part! Live, spend $300 and learn!

Hey good job man, and thanks for the information and review on the whole experience. Next year when I turn adult, I am going to try a couple of regionals, since some of my best friends are already pro and bowl quite a few of them. Also I want to try a PTQ, but the tournament closest to me is the Dick Weber Open, so no PTQ there. But thanks again, and is there anymore valuable info that you can give, or tips?

I've never bowled on any of the PBA's named patterns. I'd be interested to know just how much room for error you had, where you had to stand, where you had to target, etc. Thanks!

the space you see between these letters is about how much error room i had. i started around 15, but could get out past 12 or it was OOB. I was around 25 with the left foot. finished the day standing against the ball return, in around 27, out to about 13.

Thanks, that was very interesting. How would you describe your game (revs, speed, style, etc.)?

At least you got to do the 200 dance, not once, not 2wice, but 3 TIMES!!  I bowled in a Regional over the summer and my high game was 225...it was my last game...and trust me when I say I should have bowled about 170 that game.

Rev-O I to must say congrats!! Just having the guts to try is awesome. It is so tough out there and they are pros for a reason. I never understood how good they are until I bowled against Billy O'neill in league. I shoot and average quite well but, he is and they are on a different level. He can adjust in a frame or 2 where it would take others to long. I would never question your game or Average totally awesome. I'd let you teach me in a heartbeat!! Keep trying don't give up!!

Steve-ster, thanks for all the insight!
I know most of know about 2 lane courtesy during certain tournaments and leagues.

But can you tell us about PBA lane courtesy? A couple of local Regional Pros in my area tell me it's just as smooth as 2 lane courtesy when everyone is on the right page.

From what I hear...all it is is basically waiting "a pair to your left and a pair to your right." Is this correct?

Can you give us an example when you can?
Thanks!

It's standard PBA lane courtesy.

If you are on lane 7, you wait for bowlers on 5&6 and 9&10.  A whole pair (which is different than 2 lanes) to either side of you.  It easy once you're on the lanes.

Although I do get double jumped a lot by the over-eager amateurs.  They get frustrated and forget the courtesy.  At my last regional there were only three to a pair so we were bowling very fast.

Tony, thanks for the insight. It def. looks like something I could try and get used to as I get on the lanes and practice. I think I will go over it with a couple of the Regional pros that I see in league on Tuesdays. Thanks again!

Steve, in regards to what Tony just said about the PBA lane courtesy. Did you see any of the other amateurs/guests "double-jumping" by accident?

Thanks!

There was a guy on the pair to our right, he "only" double jumped about once a game!
