Debate on correct ball drillings and average improvement
« on: April 14, 2004, 11:10:03 AM »
I know there are many people on here that have differing views on whether or not the right drilling for the right ball on a certain house condition can be conducive to an improvement in one's average over a long haul. I guess within my main league I was struggling to get anything that I had through the season to react consistently at the back ends, as I felt everything I had was running out of gas through the mid-lanes. The last 4 weeks I was able to bowl with my new ball (drilled for a strong skid/snap reaction) I averaged 212 over the course of those 4 weeks and brought my season average up 3 pins. It reminded me of the time that I got my El Nino Wrath drilled up half way through a season where I was in the mid 190's and by season's end I had a 210 average...

If you really know the conditions, can you drill equipment to dramatically improve your average through the course of the season? And do you prefer drilling out a variety of balls with different reactions for league play, or would you set up an arsenal more for tournament bowling?

Just curious what everyone is thinking...

Matt

I find if I have a ball that suits the conditions I have to alter my line/bowling less and because it is designed for the condition, will have the most energy for the pocket.

I have a variety of balls for different tourny conditiona.

MSC2471 -- The right matchup of ball, fit, and drilling results in a reaction and carry power that gives the bowler confidence.  The confidence in turn helps cause a smooth, powerful release, which enhances accuracy.  It's a wonderful loop to be in.  --  JohnP

Matt...  Here is my spin on things:

I take to league the balls that "should" work on the THS that I see.  Some of these bowling balls with also be what I happen to use in tournaments, but when I go to these tournaments I bring more equipment to help potentially cover any condition that might be there as I don't know what it will be.

But while bowling league if I'm not getting the reaction that I want and I find that I don't actually have a ball for this reaction I will drill up a ball for it.  If I can see this shot in league there is a good chance that it will pop up in a tournment.

Basically if your V2 Particle and Wrath both seems like they didn't have enough finish then you were smart in drilling the EPP to finish harder.  Not only did this obviously help you in league, but it gives you another look for States and other tournaments that you didn't have.  I think no matter how you achieve it (similar drillings / different balls -or- various drilling on different balls) you need to be able to combat a few basic patterns that you are likely to see if you travel outside of your league conditions.
