My recent tournament trend...
« on: February 21, 2010, 10:39:17 AM »
This is starting to bug me. If you lined up the scores from the last four tournaments I've bowled in, this is what you get for the average of the first three games (approximate numbers used):

Game 1: 160
Game 2: 190
Game 3: 240

Problem here is, the format is three games qualifying, then cut to cashers' round, then stepladder. Getting better as I go along is nice, but those first two games (particularly the first) is burying me before I get started.

The format is one game, then switch pairs, shoot the next game, switch pairs again, etc. Oil pattern is typically different for each tournament, as they're held in different houses.

Obviously the problem is that I am not reading/recognizing the pattern early enough and making adjustments accordingly. I have read Wes Mallott's advice on using 7 or 8 balls to determine pattern length, shape, etc., but there are two problems there: One, it takes about 3-4 balls to warm up to where I can throw actual shots, and two, we don't have enough practice time allotted (and no practice once we switch pairs). Advice?

Jess

Moto or anyone,

Could you give an example using your method? (from a recent tournament you went to)

a. What was your benchmark ball?

b. What was the results of throwing down 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th arrows?

c. Based on results, What was your assesment of the oil?

d. What ball did you use, where did you decide to stand on the approach, and what was your target?

I understand that experience is the key to using this method. But I would think as time goes on with someone using a method like this. Would get better at lining up.

I think writing all this information down would be good for bowlers.

I have found when I have gone to past tournaments it becomes a game of guessing. Sometimes I guess right and things progress the way I see it, but most of the time I am not sure. I spend too much time making adjustments in that first game.

The last tournament I bowled at was supposed to be a reverse block.

a. My current benchmark ball is a Hy-Road drilled stacked leverage with the surface at 2000. Before that my Benchmark ball was a T-Road solid drilled the same with same surface.

b. When I threw it down the first the ball basically went for a mile and at about 40 feet it thought about turning left. When I threw it down the second arrow the ball reached about 35 feet and then went full face on the head pin. Third arrow went about 30 feet before going hard left and hitting the 4 pin. The 4th arrow also read the lane at 40 feet and caught the 4 and 7 pin.

c. Well, outside of 15 was the great flood. It played like a true reverse block where you can either take a very aggressive ball with good speed control and go directly up the soup, or dive inside and pick your favorite ball to throw away from the head pin.

d. I toyed with 2 different looks and 3 different balls. From the outside I used a Reign of Fire drilled to grab the lane fairly early and attempted to play up the oil line. There was a possible look there, but it would have taken a while to develop and I would of been behind the scoring pace. So I had to put this line away until the lanes broke down. My second look was from deep inside. I flirted with a strong pearl or a polished solid. I first used a Storm Gravity Shift with the pin above the bridge and way above my fingers and the MB to the right of my thumb. Surface on the ball is polished 1000. The ball looked good, but I still needed to burn up a little bit of the break point because the oil line seemed to skid a little bit more than usual. I then moved to a Cell which I have drilled with the pin above the middle finger and the MB to the right of my thumb with a surface of 4000. I could use this ball all day on the fresh, because my only miss with the ball was a slight skid that would skill hit the pocket but might not carry if I got cute with it at the bottom of my swing.

As far as where I stood, I typically start out at the front dots with a 4 step approach, and then vary my from there. It turned out the front dots were almost the place to be, because the ball needed just a little bit more to turn enough towards the pocket in order to carry. So stood on 25 (7 boards drift), took one step back, and aimed for the 4th arrow with my breakpoint around 13. Just enough in the oil line to hold, but not too much for the ball to sail on me.

Basically, I camped out there until I had to either chase it left with the Cell or bump down to the Gravity Shift from the same spot and then move to my Spit Fire or Freeze depending on how they broke down. I ended up going the bump down approach as the people I was bowling with where using hyper aggressive bowling balls with a very dull cover that I knew was going to create too much early burn on the lane as we went on.

I didn't bowl that great because I got stuck with a couple of bowlers that didn't really know what they were doing in terms of playing the pattern, and it was against the rules to coach during the tournament so I couldn't help them out.

I scored well enough to get into the seeding round and then match play. All through the end of seeding and match play I strictly used the Freeze as it's a fantastic little ball that allowed me to play deep without over reacting on the burn.
