My results at the Dutchman (long)
« on: May 01, 2005, 10:37:10 PM »
Bowled my 2nd tourney this weekend -- the Dutchman -- based in Lebanon, PA.  From what I understand, it's a pretty big tournament starting in April and running through, I think, July.

We bowled the singles/doubles at Palmyra Lanes.  I was surprised at how nice the center is.  Small town PA usually brings to mind centers right out of the '60s.  Palmyra is a 32 synthetic lane center with the Qubica scoring system, which I'd never seen before.  Pretty cool to get an idea of what my ballspeed is.  My partner and I were originally set for lanes 31/32 - love the ends -- but were moved to 1/2 on arrival.  Looked to the other end of the center and, to my horror, BUMPER BOWLING!!  The first squad only ran from 11-32, so, apparently there was a b-day party or youth league on our lanes.  Yippee, freakin' skippee!!  Actually, I was more worried about goop on the floor than lane conditions.  I knew we might be in trouble once I saw the butt marks just past the file line!!  Oh, well -- you get what you get.  I was using my 173 summer average, which is pretty close to the 178 I had in league this year.

The first set was for the singles part of our competition.  I decided to make this my practice session so I didn't make a fool out of myself for doubles.  Started with my Apocalypse using my usual line - 30 through 3rd arrow to about 8 at the break.  First ball in practice was OK, but if you got outside there, no recovery whatsoever.  I would imaging that's the carrydown from the wee folk.  Had to make sure to keep it tight.  Started with a 153 while fishing for a decent line and just whiffing my spares.  I switched to my Eraser PP figuring a little particle might help and that worked.  Had a little more room to play and came up to a 190 in the 2nd.  My 3rd was a disaster!!  Shot 128 with about 30 splits.  Just couldn't get a good reaction out there and I started to stick in my ball.  Had a really funny thing happen in the 3rd frame -- I just completely lost my release!!    I mean GONE for, like, 3 frames!!  Was spinning it down the lane when I'm usually a pretty high tracker.  Switched to my Animal to get the release back -- didn't help me score, but after 2 frames, I was back to my normal release.  That was SCARY!!  A whopping HUGE 471 series should get me tons-'o-cash!!

For doubles, we moved to 3/4 -- still in the bumper bowl session lanes, but noone rolled singles here, so we were back to square one.  Decided to get my Retro Roto Blue and move outside for this set.  Played straight up 10 for most of the set -- 2 board difference between the lanes (played 10 on lane 4 and 8 on lane 3) and had to move 2 boards left by the end of the last game.  This proved to be the ticket.  Started with a 167 due to getting tapped out the ying-yang and missing the freakin' spares -- although I'm getting better misses.  I'm not always dumping it in the gutter or shooting the 7 when the 10's the one standing.  Found a real good groove in the 2nd game for a 237 and finished with a 183 -- again, tapped to death, but I made most of the spares this time!!  My 587 was a big help and my partner cleared his average pretty well, too.  I'll take a 196 average for as tough as this was!!

Overall, it was a great experience.  Even though I didn't win a bologna for 6 in a row....

Nollster,

I've been going to Lebanon for about 20 years now.  We always bring a large group (60-100) and have a great time.  I love the singles & doubles house.  I've averaged around 225 there over time.  It's a quaint little bowling alley and the speed gun is fun but what I like is they don't sell beer.  But you can bring a cooler with you favorite libation.  Sawbones I can see the gin flowing freely.  We will be venturing up in 2 Fridays and we play golf early Friday after which we go to Penn National Racetrack and bet on horses that Alpo turned away.  Anyway it is a great ritual one that I look forward to every year.

Thanks Joe!!  It definitely helps to get the experiences on paper, so to speak, and, if someone enjoys the reading, it's that much better!!

I'm now wishing I would have stayed with bowling during the 15 years I wasn't!!  Maybe I'd have known about all these events that are close to home.  My partner keeps talking about getting some cash -- for me, it's all in the experience.  If I get money back, well, that's a bonus!!  I wanted that bologna, though!!  I had a 4-bagger in the 7th of that 2nd game doubles and left a major ringing 10!!  Ack!!!!  Blew what would be my last shot!  Palmyra Bowling was great -- they paired us up with a small group from South Jersey and they were fun.  I noticed there wasn't much smoking going on either.  That makes my day -- hate all that smoke going on during league!!  Seemed to be an awful lot of people falling at the line though.  One guy went down before we even got started -- was testing his slide and BOOM! down he went!!

Nolster, I was there a couple of weeks before you were and this was my 3rd or 4th trip, glad you had fun.  Is is a fun tournament, and winning baloney is great, only they wouldn't let me have more than on per event in doubles.  It was a good year for me and I should get some money back at the end.  I found that the conditions between the doubles and singles house and team to be very different.  High scoring for double and singles where I went 712, 713 (lost a bracket with a 256) to no carry and splits for the first two games of team (169, 169), switch pairs, 236 200, which gave me 2208 for the 10 games.  Right now I should cash in the boloney bank, singles, and doubles hdcp(my wife shot fairly well).  The first two games for team really hurt me for the optional singles, but overall, it was still a good year.
