Post em up for me to show him.

Well considering you bowl 8 games, 600 wouldn't be a very good showing.

I bowled with a kid (DB) out of Elk Grove Bowl, EG, IL.
He shot 200+ for the first 6 games....
He threw the ball hard off the corner.
He didn't see a difference, between Elk Grooooove Bowl and the Pete.
He took a look at the leader board after 6, after I told him not to...
He shot 130-140 the next game and was through.

He threw the ball hard off the corner, pinged 10 pins, mostly.

Most memorable Pete I shot.

My 2nd year bowling the Pete, bowling with Dan Ottman's group.

I'm on 1 & 2, with Dan right next to me on 3 & 4.  Lane 1 is dead fried...no scratch that, it is flat out stripped with nothing on it.  Lane 2 has 60ft 6in of oil.

I manage to throw 4 out of 5 strikes on Lane 1.  Lane 2, not so much.  I manage to miss the headpin every shot going into the 10th frame.  Dan is laughing and giving me well deserved grief.  So I step up in the 10th and "pure it" (if such a thing can actually be said at the Pete).  As I see it heading right at the 1-3 I thrust my hands up in victory...

Only to find myself staring at the 5-7-10!

Dan's response..."well, you finally hit the pocket."

What exactly IS the Pete? What makes it such a challenge?

Pins intentionally off spot - no rerack
Unusual oil conditions
The wall on the edge of the gutter on 16 and 1
Poles placed half way down the approach just because
Large rectangular banners out above that hang to around 4 feet above the lanes
Only 2 balls may be checked in and used

Just to name a few off the top of my head

Great story, Dan was a great guy and is truly missed in the central region!

it kinda stinks the petersen is not what it used to be pre 1994.  still hard as ever and fun, but nothing like the old petersen alleys on archer above the hardware store.  amf hoffman is a good host, considering its run by amf, and they have done a good job making it the most brutally tough tournament ever, but the conditions imho are softer compare to the old petersen alleys.

no more of the mysterous sawdust on the lanes, no more mechanic intentionally breaking the sweep bar on your lane so you would have a long wait after a string of strikes and no more special lanes behind the bar.  and hoffman has underground ball returns which is the main reason the poles are positioned between the end of the ball return and the gutter cap to mimick an above ground return.

i could hear stories all day from dan ottman on the petersen and wish he was still around to tell his stories.  many of his tales he told when i used to bowl the michigan jr. masters tournaments were hard to believe until i experienced the petersen first hand when i graduated to the adult ranks.  i bowl on the squad of 2008 petersen champ ryan kohlmeyer, and he was clutch picking up a 5-7 split straight balling a tropical storm to give himself a chance to win the petersen in his 8th game.  2 years ago i watched a right handed guy from alabama leave the 2-4-6-7-8-10 and cover it for $100 off a bet from another guy on his squad.  just a litte more than a month away until the start of the 2009 classic, its gonna be another fun year at the pete!  i was just happy to shoot 1496 last year and cash.

Ahh yes, "The Pete". I was talked into bowling this about 10 years ago. I was not told what the conditions were like, so naturally I showed up with my normal equipment. The first thing I noticed was the set-up as described above, is a little peculiar. Then we practiced on the lanes they use for the Lumberjack Challenge, and the shot was pretty normal except for the FIVE POUND PINS!!!!

So we go to check in, and they take your picture, weigh your balls(you are only allowed 2), and then WRITE YOUR LANE NUMBER ON THEM WITH CHALK AND PUT THEM IN A SHOPPING CART and proceed to take them away. At this point I was like "What the hell have I have I gotten into."

Before the squad starts they clear out the bowling area and close it off to "prep the lanes". I have been told this is done using a mop, bucket, and a squirt bottle. I do believe this is true. Then to start your squad they ring the bell and open the "Golden Doors". You get NO practice, first shot is for score.

My friend who had bowled the Pete before put us 2 newbies first. I get up on lane 3 I think with my reactive ball, and throw my normal house shot. Ball hits the lane, goes dead left and knocks over the 7 pin. I turn around and my buddy is lying on the floor laughing so hard I thought he was going to piss his pants. So I move way right and send the ball toward the first arrow, ball goes straight and begins to backup, and I get the 6-9-10 out. Big 4 count the first frame. Needless to say I could see this was no ordinary condition, so by the end of the first game I was using plastic.

After we finished bowling I swore that I would never go back, so this year will be my 10th consecutive Pete. It's probably the most fun tournament I've ever bowled, and the food in Chicago is unbelievable. Plus last year Norm Duke and Mike Machuga bowled the squad after us, and it was funny watching those guys bowl. They were having a great time and were really nice.

I can't wait till August to head to the Windy City again, plus we have Cubs tickets this year!!!  Sorry for the long post, I just like talking about "The Pete".

Haven't had the "pleasure" of trying this at Hoffman but I did bowl at Archer&39th?  I grew up near there (Cermak and California) and used to bowl with Andy Sebasek (sp?) squads for scratch guys.  About $350 to bowl and win $300+ for pot games shooting 220-230.

Horror stories:

1) Personally ran out two 4-5-7-10's watching my grey Angle "hook" into the pocket
2) Have seen candle pins come down in the rack, friend said he saw a duckpin.
3) Biggest and funniest one, one guy started with a 5 bagger.  Lanes magically blacks out....we wait for awhile (thinking it was a blkout or it was being fixed), a guy comes out with a mop and bucket and mops about 8-10 feet of the heads (on one lane) like he was "swabbing the deck"..lol

Anything goes at Pete!  They didn't care who you were, PBA or not.  Used to take a little over even to win, is it still like that?

Went there once just after resin was everywhere. A real cranker (220 average) decided throwing the Rhino Teal was a great idea. The first pair was had flood on the left and sanded lane on the right. He picked off the 10 pin on his first shot on the left and the first shot on the right went into the left channel 'maybe' 3/4 down the lane. It was fun watching him bowl

Can't say I did too much better with my blue hammer and white dot throwing straight up the channel (with no arrows to throw at it seemed like being like Walter Ray and throwing the blue ball "straight up 5" should work)
