Keeping the ball close to the ankle
« on: May 05, 2006, 01:07:56 AM »
I was taught to keep the ball close to the left ankle (I'm a right-hander) during release to ease aiming and increase accuracy. This should be done by keeping my right arm close to the body throughout the approach (closing up the armpits).

However I found it quite difficult because the ball seems to hit the right side of my right thigh. So I cannot keep my arm close to the body throughout. If I don't do this the ball is never close to the ankle during release.

What should I do? And does it really matter to keep the ball close to the ankle?

Thanks in advance.

I used to have the privelege of practicing with the Great PBA hall of famer Dave Davis(20 titles).

Considered one of the best bowling forms of all time and still was a force on the senior tour at age 58 when it downsized.

He practiced this fundamental for 45 minutes in every practice session he did starting  in 1957 without even looking at the pins.  When I did it(occassionally ...it resulted in a lot of cash for me).

Often if you cannot do it do to thighs you either have big thighs...or you have a narrow tripod.

As pictured in this article.

I am working on reopening my tripod right now!

I believe close to the ankle and projected LEVEL out onto the lane are the most important overlooked fundamentals of good bowling in the game!

Thanks LuckyLefty!

This tripod concept is new to me.
If I try opening up the tripod, and to keep the ball close to the ankle, my upper body should be tilt towards the bowling-arm side, right?
And so my arm would not necessarily be very close to the side of the upper body?

Stick your butt out behind and to the left to give your arm room to move freely past the hip and right leg. Having the head over the ball helps clear the path for a free and smooth armswing. Getting close to the ankle will come naturally with a free path for the ball to fall into.

Thats what I was going to say!

Creates a slot or opening to be close to ankle!
