change in span cause a dramatic difference?  What's the largest adjustment (measurement wise) you've made and did it help any?

I seem to remember going down from an extremely stretched span to a relaxed on in one swell foop - about 1/2 inch.  Later on I went shorter still, but have now gone back up to about where the first relaxed span was.

Oh, yeah, it helped a lot.  My hand quit hurting almost immediately and I started throwing the ball better.

I’ll say it depends.

If you had a good relaxed finger tip fit then an extra 1/16 might not make much difference.

If you are on the edge of being long then 1/16 can make a world of difference.

A 1/8th inch is quite a bit in my book.

I don’t believe being short 1/16th or 1/8th is a crucial as being long by that amount.

I’ve known bowlers that could feel 1/32nd of a inch difference but I personally wouldn’t know it.

I'd say shortening your span 1/8 of an inch has as dramatic effect as losing an inch somewhere else would!

It's dramatic!

Maybe 20 years ago, when I was young and flexible, I might have said no.  But now that I'm older, I can say that a 1/16" difference in span is *huge.*

About a year ago, my ball driller (who is now my ex-driller) missed by 1/16" on the middle finger span.  My hand and wrist were sore for weeks after using that ball.

I hope you don't know that from experience.

AS always, the correct answer is "IT DEPENDS", on many factors.

If you're at your stretch comfort limit now, 1/16" is going to be noticeable and bad, like Dusty's experience.

If you're at a shortened span now, 1/8" less may feel uncontrollable, like your hands too weak. If you go 1/16" stretched from this shortened comfort grip, it may OK, no big deal. Go 1/8" longer and it may be stretched and uncomfortable; it may be painful.

It all depends on where you are now.

Just remembered. I am at what I'd call a shortened grip, with totally comfortable span. My driller accidentally went 1/16" less. NO big deal for me, but I had to be aware of how to place the angle of my thumb when inserting, because it allowed me to play around with more release variations. I may try this as a new permanent span, but I have to remember what I want to do, in more detail, if I choose this route.

I can really feel anything that is off... so a discreptancy in span, even 1/16" will give me fits. Even if the bevel is off I feel it. I draw out my own stuff and let the "man" cut me lines, then I'll take care of the rest. The pro shop guys love me.

I can't remember if it was 1/8 or 1/16, but I had my span shortened and no longer have finger pain.  It's also added a few much-needed revs to my delivery.  It's made a big difference.
