Currently I would say AMF Desoto..
League cost is $17
First I would say the lanes broke down for serveral teams and the lanes they moved us 2 broke down.. This isnt the first time but this is sad...

I bowled DeSoto a few years back in travel league, and I agree with Tracy.... It's a hole.

AMF Ritchie in Glen Burnie MD. I don't think they ahve any leagues left there anymore. Lanes broke down all the time, staff unfriendly and rude.
I am seeing a pattern here. Mostly AMF centers....lol
-
Lol, I bowled there when I used to live in MD many moons ago.
I have to say KC Bowl here in hanford. The open play rates even for those who are league members there are through the roof. The Pro Shop there is borderline mediocre at best (Though he is a really nice guy). And, to this day, this is the only house that actually let open play bowlers come in and trash the lanes up until league practice begins.
--------------------
Does it really matter?
-
Try the Main Event in Lewisville Texas not sanctioned and no leagues they only rent by the hour no price per game, they are always doing "glow bowling" and the lanes are so dry my plastic spare ball breaks. They also have several 100 video games and about 15 pool tables and even a laser tag game it is strictly for non bowlers to have a fun time.
-
Easy for Me
When I averaged 211 about 5 yrs Ago I went to a mens league full of decent bowlers in this 10 lane establishment in SOUTHBRIDGE MASS and for the year averaged 166---AND I WAS THIRD HIGH FOR THE LEAGUE!----This wasnt a Sport shot either it was just a god awful house

AMF Mowry Lanes in Fremont, CA. old wooden lanes, bad approaches, archaic scoring system, horrible customer service, mechanic who can't fix anything, and when they choose to oil, short, light, and spotty. and then, when you complain to the manager, he says, "well, the place is really clean don't you see!!!!"

the Bowling alley in Marion WI is a pit.

My vote goes to Don Carter Tamarac lanes. Filthy rest rooms, lanes with humps at the joints, poor working equipment, bad food, warm beer. Oh, and a staff who seems to go out of their way to tick off league bowlers. It's the closest to me, and I won't go in there. The pro shop is ok, but the rest of the place is a pit.

Marion WI. does have a hole for lanes!!! Tomahawk and is pretty god awful too
-
I only bowled once in Tomahawk in a singles tournament.
finished 2nd to Fenske.
I've bowled in worse place than that.

2nd arrow is for pansies.

I won't mention any names because there is still ONE person working there that has a clue, but the name has an A and an M and an F in it. Years ago it was a good place to bowl, but now it's pretty much 54 lanes of Hell.

AMF Kegler's Lanes in Charlottesville, Va. Place doesn't oil half the time, the lanes are beat up wood that hasn't been resurfaced, balls get chewed up, pins need to be replaced, management is incompetent, and games typically are in the $5-8 range.

That's why if I bowl with friends, I take them to Waynesboro! The lanes aren't great, but I had no trouble, and I was so confused when there was something called oil on the lanes. The $1.25/game before 6PM offset the 20 minute drive.
Another horrible house is AMF Military Highway in Norfolk, Virginia. I've bowled travel league there multiple times, and the machines frequently break down, the return eats up balls, and the management there could care less.

My local lanes have conditioned me to block out a lot. When it down pours the ceilings leak. On any given night (practically every night) you can have pin holder/s swapped out, reracks (missing buttons), black outs, pins in the table, won't set up pins, incorrect scoring, calls for ball returns, etc etc. In the beginning I was so furious it would throw me off my game now it's just another Tuesday. It's also not known for being a higher scoring house which in the end I like. The place isn't run down it's just not properly kept like anywhere else I bowl.
We have a place called Sky Lanes about 35 mins from here. It's an old AMF house, wood lanes, old pin setters, piss poor customer service basically a throw back to the late 80s. That is about the worst place I've bowled at yet, not a dump just a place I'd rather not spend money.

You guys would laugh at this place believe me.

In no particular order:
1. Palos Verdes
2. Shatto 39 (39 lane house because they had to remove the 40th lane to make a fire exit. Also, still have above ground ball returns)
3. Bowling alley in ridgecrest...1 tournament, 5 games qualifying, 5 people's bowling balls got destroyed.
4. AMF Westchester is going downhill fast.

I live in Fort Worth and there is many centers in Dallas County I haven't tried yet. Closet to Desoto I've been is Red Bird Lanes in Duncanville. It's kind of nice for an older center.
What's worse out my way? In Fort Worth area, goes to: Don Carter City View. Biggest bowling center in Dallas/Fort Worth (64 lanes), nicely maintained but I've had way too many negative experiences from the people and management that work there. As for "dumps" it would go to Cowtown lanes in the armpit of Fort Worth, River Oaks. Nasty, ugly weird place that has lanes on one side and lanes on the other. If it had a severe remodel it could be a good alley. The other nasty place is AMF Hurst in Hurst. Old, out of date bowling alley in a beat up parking lot like Cowtown. Next to an abandoned building that pairs with it. Only has 24 lanes I think. The lanes are in horrible shape and they never strip them. The heads are not even and are beat up. Could either buy out the building next to it and expand it and remodel the whole place but since AMF owns it then it will never happen. AMF Showplace in Euless is a nice alley but AMF owns it and management charges 5.00 a game on the weekends and they have a 54 lane center with little open play because no one can afford that.
The worst though is Holiday Lanes in Denton. Went there once and will not return. Not only was there 0 oil, but I thought the building was about to fall down on me. One of the most nasty bowling alleys I've ever seen. Also, the automatic scoring machines were all broke and beat up. I had no idea what the score was.

Main Event is not a bowling alley in my opinion. It's a multi entertainment center like Dave and Buster's or former Bronco Bowl...just have different things like video and hand games and lazer tag. The lazer tag is actually fun. I just wish they had a time that only 18+ years up can enter.
I went to the Main Event in Grapevine the weekend it opened and I brought my own equipment. It was like 18 an hour which is outrageous. The lanes had little to no oil on them from what I remember. I had to play right and hard and straight. I tried to stand on 40 and drift hard left and wanted to loft the cap but the ball return was so long would have made it impossible. I did have a good time watching the pros in Lewisville at the Rolls to Riches a couple years ago. But it's not a place I'd ever pay money to bowl at.
-
There is a place in Michigan called Fountain View I think. I subbed there for a few weeks, and it was by far the worst house ever.
Their house league shot had no oil. It was crazy. I had to stand as far right as I could (lefty) take out all of the hand, and get it as far left as I could with as much speed as I could.
It was SICK
Challenging though, and that was a bonus.

afm strike & spare in green brook, new jersey
definitely one of the worst houses i've ever been to, mostly cause their lanes constantly break down.
-
Norco classic lanes(Norco,Calif),the dirtiest floor's an approaches I have every bowled-walked on
--------------------
"I hate losing more than I love winning"
-
You can find a lot worse centers in the southern California inland empire area than Norco.....AMF Arrowhead in San Bernardino, and Oak Tree in Diamond Bar come to mind just off the top of my head. I've never seen much problem with the approaches in Norco, only problem I had there was when the staff allowed a birthday party to take flash pictures while an ABT tournament was going on, but I blame the director as much as the staff for that one. I bowl at Arrowhead a lot, and it isn't the worst center in the world but there isn't a pair of lanes in that house that plays like a pair, and some of the approaches have gum and other substances glued to the approach. Oak Tree just doesn't have any oil, and the people that bowl there are proud of that, like it's some great thing that they've learned how to bowl on virtually no oil. The 3rd one that comes to mind, and I refuse to bowl in this one is Foothill in Fontana. Lanes are so burned and dry they leave white burn tracks on your equipment. Bowling is usually cheap there, but there's a reason why.

I have to agree. All of the houses I bowled at as a kid (Sport Bowl, Lynhurst Bowl, Raceway Lanes) were all bought by Royal Pin and shut down. It sucks too, as Royal Pin centers have terrible folks working there and I can't bowl anywhere in Indy without a Royal Pin sign out front!

Lived there for three years -- you just described why my wife and I would drive past the bowl in Murfreesboro and head to Smyrna 30 minutes away instead.
My wife and I rented a pair in Murfreesboro one night and I had to manually score us on the computer. No matter what we left on the righthand lane, it gave us the 3-5-6 bucket. It didn't matter if it was a strike, single-pin spare, gutterball, whatever.
My personal favorite is Holiday in Bessemer, Ala., right outside Birmingham. I bowled state tournament there a few years ago and, between 10 a.m. and noon on a Sunday morning, two cars got broken into in the parking lot while we were bowling. And the parking lot was directly adjacent to and in clear view of a U.S. highway.
When one of the victims complained to desk control, they told him, "Sorry, the security guards don't get here until 3 p.m." BEAUTIFUL.
Liberty Lanes in Pensacola, Fla., is right up there, if it's still standing. AMF River City Bowl in Decatur, Ala., isn't far behind. As for ambiance, having to fight through 5,627 emo kids and two or three who looked like stunt doubles for Alice Cooper at Parkway Lanes in Huntsville, Ala., was a real treat.

One of the worst I've been to has to be the Winchester Lanes in Memphis. The approaches are sticky and the old wood lanes are some of the roughest around.
The other would be Terrace Sports-Bowling in Tampa. The lanes are heaved so bad you can see your ball go airbound as it goes over the high boards and clears the lows.

In high school, I worked at a Strike & Spare bowling alley that Schmittou owned. He stopped by occasionally to talk to the manager, smoke a cigar, throw back a couple drinks, and sit around. Not once ever in my entire time working there did he say a single word to me. Not one word. If I said "hi" to him when passing by or something, he'd just plain ignore me. After I stopped working there, one night I was bowling in a men's league with my dad and Schmittou walked around talking to the league bowlers. He had been drinking quite a bit and was being friendly. He came over to me and asked me how I was doing. I said to him "I worked for you for two years, and you never once said a single word to me. But now since I'm a paying customer, you're willing to actually give me the time of day? Get the fock away from me, you a-hole." My dad smiled and nodded in approval as Schmittou sunk his head and walked away.

JIB Lanes in Flushing NY. DUMP HOLE if ive ever seen one. Lanes are old as time and were never kept in good condition. Lanes are never conditioned/oiled. They go days without oiling. Computers are old and faulty and always have issues. You are NOT allowed to use cell phones in the building because it interferes with the computers causing more issues. Just an all around dump.

Canada... Eastview Bowl... Worst lanes ever.... completely old beat up wood lanes. Since we have 5-pin here and the house operator is a 5-pin nut, the only staffers we get are the same way. When ever we bowl for league or practicing they will have people bowling on them before us, ripping up the oil and actually making my spare ball hook. The lanes are very outdated with old 70's style decor. (no they weren't trying to make it look that way)

I used to live in Southern California...Rancho Cucamonga to be exact. Before the state of the art in it's time Deer Creek Lanes was built, my parents bowled at Thunderbird in Ontario which I heard closed down and for a few years in the mid 80's bowled league at Oak Tree in Diamond Bar. I would go with my Mom way out there and would meet my Dad after he got off work. It had a terrific alley and one of the best arcades in most any bowling alley around. I never remember that center was bad but that was 20 years ago so perhaps it changed.
The worst centers I bowled at when I was young in California was called "Bowlium" I think it was in Montclair which I heard closed. That center refused to go to automatic scoring. It was a nasty center. Another nasty center that closed right after I moved to Thousand Oaks was Haley's in Simi Valley. Yuck!

in my old town Holland, Michigan, it usta be Northland Lanes, which usta be the premier center to bowl at, but the owner's sold it, to some rich yuppie who would park his Viper, Porsche, and what other 100,000$+ car in front of the building, while the place went to shyt...
The last time i bowled there was about 16 yrs ago, and i was throwing my red hammer standing lined up with the left gutter and Aiming at the right gutter, to only see my ball miss the head pin....
The other stories i've heard is the water pipes were all busted up in the bathrooms and to fix it, the owner would just put down cardboard boxes for people to stand on..
You consistently knew if you started on X lanes you were going to move 3 sets of lanes by the end of league....
Leagues would come n go after a few weeks of play. Oil was a mystery, somestimes it was bone dry, next it was a sport shot...
NOW on the plus side,,,, a few yrs ago, a group of guys ( bowlers ) bought the place and totally re-vamped everything and made it back into the premier bowling center in town.. only problem is, you will average about 240+ without trying,...........
