Finally broke 600
« on: July 08, 2003, 02:18:17 AM »
Well, I finally did it.  I have been bowling for about 2 years now.  I knew I was getting better (167 average) but I have some consistency problems.  Lately I was in the 500 range weekly, which was new for me.  Then today, as I was heading out to summer league, I saw my neighbor and she asked me -- "What do you want to bowl today?"  I said, "Two games over 200 and a high other game would be great." It must have put it in my head.  So, I get to league late due to a phone call, throw two warm up balls and then string 4 stikes and 4 more 9/ (mostly ten pins)finishing with a 212.  Second game had two bad opens but rebounded for 187.  Third game was strikes and 9/ (10 pins again) and one 8/ for 236.  Final score, 635.  I was using my VooDoo which is still awaiting a patch-up for a bad scratch from last week, but I am feeling good with this ball right now.

What was even better was that I was throwing a good ball.  Even the spare leaves were on pocket shots.  I was wearing the pro-release brace which has really helped me feel my release more and stablize my wrist. (I got this brace from one of you -- The Lurker -- about a year ago.) The others were all watching my ball because even when it wasn't a strike, it was looking really great.  Mind you this morning league has an overwhelming # of straight ball plastic throwers.  I used plastic on the 10 pins and picked up all but two - in in the 10th fram and one in the 1st.

So that's my good news and I'm really happy.  I hadn't bowled in a week due to some circumstances around here -- maybe I let myself forget a few bad habit?

Congrats,
One of my favorite "basic rules" in goals is to never give up no matter what your games you bowl and to keep plugginmg away til' that particular goal is met!!!Looks ta me that you did this. So,you used a VooDoo huh?
Then I suggest you celebrate THAT with a HONEST TO GOODNESS review on your VooDoo!!!
I own one too, actually I have several b-balls that work similiar to VooDoo,thats another story, sorry.

If ya read this and ya already reviewed it,oops again,if not do it,review it!!

Good luck and lets read about another "600" or even a "650",sky's the limit, well ya have ta pratice at it.Remeber A GOOD "600" is easily MADE when you get as many SPARES as you do STRIKES,so try not to miss easy spares and you'll see a huge difference. You'll get "600"s for sure.I'm sure you know this, its just a fun reminder thats all.

I'm still waiting for my first "850" or better yet "900"!!!!!
I can dream cant I???

My games now days are for fun only,I haven't bowled in tournaments or league in over 2 1/2 years.I just practice ta keep in shape and test B-balls for fun,no big deal.

I've bowled horrible games and killer games,BUT one reminder. Its never over until the last frame of the last game in the series!!

Good luck and good bowling!

Congrats.
If the league is sanctioned, you are now eligible to join The National 600 club. Check it out with your local secretary.

Congratulations, Serice!  The first one is always the most difficult to achieve. I'm sure there will be more to come now.

Yep, great job.  Some people take 600 for granted, I know I do, but it's always going to be one of those marks.  It's a solid night most of the time, and the first one is always awesome, great job!

Congrats Serice!  That first sanctioned 600 is definitely a good feeling for sure.  I still recall my first sanctioned 600 some 10 years back, and it was a 636.  I think that I hit every number in the 590's at least 10 times before cracking the 600 barrier.  Now today, I've logged over 660 600+ sanctioned series, and I still log every single one that I shoot.  Obviously I consider 600 as a significant number, or I wouldn't still be tracking every single one that I shoot even today.

While the stats are fresh, start your 600+ logbook, with the specific data on every sanctioned 600 series.  If nothing else, it makes for some interesting statistics at a later date!  May you shoot many more, and the next BIG barrier is now the 700 series.

I've gotten to where I look forward to shooting a 600+ series on every set, just so I can make another entry into my log book.  Of course, my 491 tonight wasn't very satisfying, to say the least.  I guess that's why they call it an average.    On a positive note, the 491 dropped my average some 5 sticks tonight, and it happened as it hit the 21st game.  Now, if I can just shoot some decent sets in the following 5 weeks left in the summer league, maybe I can pick up the "most improved" average award" .......that's the only good thing that I can say for such a miserable set tonight.

Thanks everyone.  The 600 was big because it had eluded me for so long.  I would have two really strong games and then crap out on one and miss it.  Mumzie, the Secratary is on my team and she will send in the paperwork.  It was nice, one of the other bowlers came over and congratulated me and said to make sure I ask for 600 Club.  Nice to know that others were pleased with my accomplishement too.  This summer leaague was the first one I had ever joined last year so they have kinda been with me from the start.  I had the desk print out the games and am going to keep it in a file.  My friends think I'm nuts because I have been going back over each frame and what happened.  It helps me understand what the feel of my swing was, what adjustments I was making and how I got myself back on track when it started to slip.

Game three still amazes me... That kind of consistency.
9 0 - 10 pin miss when the spare slipped off my thumb. Didn't let it rattle me
x - strike line laying it down on 16 to the 11
x
x
x - only brooklyn
x - adjusted to a straighter line to the pocket
9/ - 10 pin
x
x
9/9 - both 10 pins

I really like how that looks, a couple more stikes and WOW!

I once belonged to both the National and the New York 600 Clubs, but haven't heard a word from them in about 20 years.  I shot at least 5 sanctioned 600s last year, and still not a word.

Serice, Congratulations!  I have a number of 600's under my belt, but none will be as sweet as that first one  Enjoy the euphoria and soon you'll be hitting the 600 mark regularly!

Melonhead, I don't think the men have a 600 club.  At least I have never heard anything about it.

As for the women, check with your local association secretary.  I have been voicing my displeasure that the 500 and 600 club applications are not a part of the secretary's packet.  I have friends in the 500 club and they are always complaining that there isn't enough participation.  Well, advertise...educate all league secretaries to offer the forms to any woman who shoots a 500 or 600 during league.  I had to ask several people before getting to our association secretary and am finally in the 600 club.  I'll be bowling my first local 600 Club tournament August 3rd.

Once again, Congratulations Serice!

congrats, but dont get your head big. sometimes people get excited thinking that once they throw a good game/set, they can do it every time for there on out, then you dont and you get mad. lol.. at least thats how it kinda went for me.. Like when i bowled my first 300, i bowled a 172 and a 174 afterwards.. I got big headed. This is a good peice of advice, use it, it will help.

Don't worry channel surfer... I'm very grounded when it comes to my abilities!!  I often practice with some friends who just casual bowl.  They expect to see me throwing a 180+ games every time and when I am down around 130-140 (or less!) they "feel bad for me."  I keep reminding them that I'm not looking at the score, I'm looking at what I am doing or not doing and how the lanes are changing.  Good game or bad -- I try to learn something every time.

ThongPrincess -- thanks and have fun with your first 600 Club tournament!  I totally agree about the need to promote locally.

Thanks, TP.  If I recall correctly, my membership was under my former married name.  I've remarried since, but kept my maiden name this time around.  I'll check with WIBC.  Thanks for the tip, and good luck at the tournament.  They're lots of fun.

Serice, I completely understand your going back over every frame during each game.  While I'm bowling in sanctioned competition, I keep a frame by frame log of everything that happens.  If I don't strike, I'll even designate the pin(s) left standing after the first ball just above the frame entry, so that I can track every move that I made during each set.  Some bowlers think that I'm a little bit overinvolved by tracking every frame, but it can easily show me statistics and patterns developing that would otherwise be lost as soon as you go to the next frame.  And, by my record keeping, I can tell you that I have left as many as 14 10-pins in a single 3 game set (3 in the first game, 5 in the second, 6 in the third), but stats such as these would be lost without my recording every ball.  And, I can easily spot trends such as leaving certain pins on one lane or the other, and this info allows me to make better selections on adjustments.  And, at the end of a good set, this bookkeeping allows me to easily refer back to how many strikes I had, what pins cost me an honor score, or whatever.  And, I can tell you that from my statistics, it normally takes about 18 strikes (on average) to shoot a 600 series, where it typically takes about 23 or more to shoot a 700 series.

Keep up the record keeping.....it does come in useful at times, and it gives you something to do after bowling each frame (kind of like a post-shot routine).
