I discuss bowling with a lot of people at the local bowling centers. It amazes how so many have no clue how they release the ball.

One bowler comes to mind: He actually thinks he stays behind the ball, and throws it like some of the pros. When you actually watch him throw his hand is on top of the ball and fingers out in front. He spins the ball.

If you would show him a video, he probably deny that it is him throwing on the video.

I know I was shocked at the first bowling video of me, but it helped me so much. I became a better bowler.

So many bowlers do not know their own specs. Is this something that could help the sport?  Maybe they don't have to know the ins and outs of what things mean, but at least have their numbers. I am referring to: Speed, Rev Rate, PAP, Axis Rotation and Tilt.

Talkin' Trash!

It is all relative.  Good golfers know their clubhead speed and the angles associated with their address.  But the average golfer has no idea.  The same can be said for other sports/activities.  Cyclists have cadences each tries to maintain with specific gearing.  Tennis players have specific string types and string tensions for different reasons.  When someone is ready to improve, they will learn more about their sport.  Beginners may not need the same type of information as the pros, but there becomes a time when it will be needed to get better.

I don't know mine but my driller does (Lee at BowlerX). If I asked him, I'm sure he'd tell me.  And I am a bit curious, but knowing wouldn't affect me. Right now I am what I am. If I get a new ball, I rely in him to lay it out and drill it for me, because it would be ridiculously stupid of me to presume I know better than him. If at some point I would start getting coached up a little to take a bigger step in my game, then that would be important, maybe.

I certainly don't think I release like a pro though. To thine own self be true.

I know my speed and PAP. My driller knows all my specs and I trust him to do me right when I get a ball drilled. Im sort of the opposite on how I think I look and how I actually look when throwing the ball. First video I saw of myself I was like holy S*&T I look like crap, who is that guy!!!! People who bowl with me in leauge, the wife and my driller (also coaches me) tell me otherwise. They seem to think im smooth, have good footwork and when I dont grab at the bottom my release is pretty good. Aperantley im really hard on myself and lack a bit in confidance and I still have no urge to see myself on video again.

I guess I was kind of looking at this way. You are spending $180 - $200 on a bowling ball. Will it make a difference if a bowler has their specs with them?

Give you an example. The local bowling center does not have a pro shop. There is a pro shop in the area. So buying a ball in his shop can be difficult for someone who has been bowling for a while. Is a good bowler and looking for that ball that is going to give them that extra carry.

The pro shop can fit the ball properly, makes a good estimation on pap based on the bowler's track (if it can been seen on his previous ball). Probably can get speed from the bowler. But rev rate and rotation I guarantee the bowler has no clue. So the pro shop asks where the bowler plays at right now, and what line is that bowler throwing. He does a good job figuring things out. But wouldn't it be simple if you just went to the lanes to get this information.

It would seem someone could make a better decision on ball choice if the bowler's specs were all laid out for the pro shop. No guess work. Just the facts.

Some people over think things.  If the driller see's you bowl then you shouldn't really need the details unless you are bowling sport shots (99% of bowlers don't ever).

Here is a quote from Monacelli

“A lot of people may not know that I really only had a basic knowledge of my bowling equipment and lane conditions until recently,” said the 52-year-old Monacelli. “With the game changing so much now I had to pay more attention to what balls I should be using in different situations.
“Back in the 80s when I was bowling on tour, I was a ‘feel player’ and I could make the equipment I happened to be using work,” Monacelli added. “But now you just can’t totally rely on your skill — you have to combine the skill with good knowledge of the bowling ball and how it reacts with the lane conditions.”

I think he is saying you do not need to know so much about equipment to be good bowler. I can vouch for Monacelli from experience, a lower average bowler(170 THS) from my area keeps complaining about incorrect VAL angle and Drilling angle by 20˚ is causing his ball to not hook and prevent him to be higher average bowler and I keep telling him, no one jumps 30 pins average increase due to little difference in layout and sideweight.  :-X

To the OP, welcome to the most fun part of being a pro shop operator.

KNOW YOUR GRIP SPECS, you be glad you did!!!  if you move from city to city or don't have a Driller that you can stay with for a long time and trust, it's a good idea to know IMO.

I wanted to learn about my specs..Because of my bad experiences with drillers.  I know my grip and all axis's in my head all because I put my trust on these "trusty" paper on the wall drillers and had bad fits. I used to work a lot with my hands and learned to "FEEL" different things I placed on my hand. It was part of the job. So early on, I knew how my hand felt in a good fitted ball and in a bad one.

In my old job, I moved a lot and had funky hours and days off. Finding a driller with hours that fit my schedule was the only way I can get a ball punched up.  I've had drillers who copied a ball, check my span, or took from a spec sheet I gave them, and still mess up my grip. Over the years I've had over a dozen drillers who worked on my equipment and I can only think of 4 who did a good job. (two are on here - thanks guys). And when I do find them, they leave lol. (Mike M., Rick L. - thanks man. Llyod and Kieth non BR members were the other two. I think Kieth is back on tour? not sure how true that is.)

Keith was player services director before BP and I believe he is back with the PBA.  Not sure what he's doing, just caught a glimpse on a couple of shows.
