NCAA Short Oil Pattern + What ball
« on: June 13, 2022, 07:50:14 AM »
Hi Fellow Bowlers - I am coaching one of my high school athletes at the university level.  They bowl short, medium, and long patterns.  PBA Patterns with a different name.  The athletes arsenal includes ProTon PhysiX (Dual Angle 50* X 5" X 30* = 80*), RST X-2 (Same as the Proton), Phaze II (40* X 4" X 20 = 60*), and Phaze III (Same as Phaze II).  Plastic spare ball.  So the question - What ball and DA drill pattern would you suggest for the short pattern?  Plus any other thoughts!  Thank you - Coach Denny

Do they have experience on sport patterns?

They seem to have a good starting point with those balls. Without knowing any more about the bowler, I'd probably expect them to be in the Proton or P2 for the most part.

If they don't have experience in a competitive environment, would definitely recommend waiting to drill something new unless it's already known they'll be bowling on higher friction surfaces

Of those balls you mentioned you are wanting to go Phaze 2 with some surface.  For one, you are dealing with a lot of volume.  Secondly; anything polished is going to want to go sideways when it exits the pattern.  The P2 will help control the pattern front to back.

Based on the info given, P2 or Proton would be the choices.  Short patterns can play very different based on how much hook the gutter has and how fast the bowler can throw it.  Axis rotation and axis tilt also play huge roles in what type of equipment to use.  If your bowler is up the back of it, a polished ball might work, if she gets around it she will definitely need surface and a rolly core.

In short, there's not enough info to make a surefire equipment choice and if she has slow ball speed, most likely none of these choices would be good.

Did you forget a digit on the medium pattern volume?
