Need a ball rec.
« on: March 08, 2006, 02:49:10 AM »
Ok folks, I'm looking for a ball that won't overreact on hooking heads, will rev up in the midlane, and won't overreact on flying backends.  The hooking heads part is optional, as I rarely see this.  I'll probably want something that either comes dull or with a lower grit sheen, or that can be  worked to that finish.  Probably lower RG, yes?  I'm not particular as to company (I mostly have Roto and Buzzsaws now, but am open to suggestion.)  One thing I thought of was maybe a Big Bully?

Any ideas?

If you like RG, the RS-P might do the trick, but it would depend a lot on how much oil you're talking about.  The new ZR40 is supposed to be very controllable as well.  I haven't thrown either, that's just what I've heard.  I have a Black Power Groove that's real smooth.  400 grit dull, and a light-load particle to boot.  Those are cheaper than dirt because no one seems to want them.  It's not a low-RG ball by any stretch, but it might work.

I had a goliath drilled with the infamous "patrick girard" layout (cg near center of grip and pin below and left of thumb) that reacted just as you described (or course with out the heads part.. as this ball was ver aggressive).  This type of layout give lots of early revs in the mids, but lays off on the backends.  Might be just what you are looking for...  I can give you some additional information if you are interested.

if you are looking at the big bully you may like the Action.
I have been enjoying with a good read through the fronts.  and tame reaction on the flying back end.
The Action has a 1200 grit finish on it so its very versitle on changing the finish for what you need

Hey Rags... What you described is exactly what my tsunami does... Gets through the heads good, and revs up in the midlane and gives a continuous hook from there on... nothing snappy at all.  I used the same drill as Triggerman, its a semi pin axis drill.  I love the ball, and what it offers me.  Just another suggestion.  Here is a great example of the ball/ layout   http://www.bowlingballexchange.com/showthread.php?t=16005&highlight=mini+review

Rags, as I suggested elsewhere, the Tsunami should fit the bill. I was wondering how long it would be before someone else suggested it (^^^)!

UPDATE.  Well, I went with cheap.  Simply because my driller had a "perfect" ball sitting in the shop.  And a bit out of left field.  A Power Groove Proactive (the plum one - light load particle pearl).  1 1/2" pin, layed out 2 x 2.  Couldn't resist for $45, drilled.  I figure if this doesn't work I'm not out much and will then have an excuse to buy a Tsunami.  We'll see what happens when I throw it tomorrow.

If you can find one, drill up a VP2, pin 6-7 from the PAP.  You will like the reaction.  A lot.
