Need a Ball Recommendation
« on: November 05, 2008, 11:14:19 PM »
I am pretty much a RH stroker and I predominantly throw a TKO.  I carry a 190 average at this time and want to take the next step and it's time for a new ball.

My perfect shot scenario has been standing center, throwing the ball over second arrow about 14.5 mph.  This year, I have had to move right 4 boards, throw right of second arrow, and crank this up to 16.0 mph due to lane conditions and the inability to really control the TKO.  Control still suffers at times, but that is a pretty significant increase in speed and is a bit outside of my comfort zone.  Also, my TKO really wasn't meant to be thrown like this.

I don't mind playing right, but I need something that rolls a bit longer and cuts hard to the pocket.

Any suggestions?

If you need more info, just ask.  Thanks in advance.

More than likely, whichever ball you choose, from whichever company, you're going to see a definite change in your game.  I'm assuming you've had your TKO for a while, and have quite a few games on it.  You're probably seeing a smooth arc, and depending on the lane conditions, a fairly small angle of entry, relatively speaking.  Assuming you're going to be going with something of at least moderate strength, you will probably have to move a few boards inside, even on the new lane conditions.  The Psycho from Hammer would be an excellent choice, it's a very versatile ball, not the biggest hooking by any means, but more than enough hook to get the job done on a league shot.  It will also keep you from having to make too drastic of a change since it doesn't have a huge backend, but again, plenty to create good pin carry.  Good luck to you.

Third the Psycho, or possibly a loud Noize from Columbia.

You described it perfectly, thegame.  It is currently rolling with a very smooth arc, which can be very unforgiving if I do not keep the speed up.

The resident pro at our pro shop recommended the Noize.

Based on the suggestions, I did some researching on the Psycho, and I have to agree that this ball seems to play into my strengths.  Any recommendations on how to get it drilled?  The standard layout seems to match what I was requesting.

Also, if I was to add 2 more balls to the arsenal, what would compliment the Psycho?

I'm a LH stroker and I've had terrific success with Lanemasters World Class Reactive.  Goes long and moves strong...without having to give it much hand.

The Noize is also a great ball and very affordable, best bang for your buck ball out there imo.

As for complimenting the Psycho you could go Emerald Vibe below and The Sauce above.

No offense, take the $150 and take 5 lessons for a good coach... better yet, take 3 lessons from a great coach. Have your grip analysed. But if you want to take the next step, dont allow your bowling ball to do the work that you should be doing because that shot and that ball wont match up on every pattern every day. But skill does.

Thank you, but since you have not watched me bowl and do not know my bowling history, your advice is pretty insignificant.  No offense.  I asked for a ball recommendation.  If I wanted lessons, I would have asked for recommendations on who to go to.

I do not expect the ball to do the work.  What I do expect is to be able to throw a ball the way it was meant to be thrown in a consistent fashion.  My TKO was not drilled to be hurled 16mph up first arrow, which I am forced to do now.  It is unforgiving.  If I throw it 15.75, it's through the head.  If I throw it 16.25, it's a wash out.

My problem has been an excess number of splits due to the fact that I am comfortable rolling the ball at 14.5 and can do so consistently.  Throwing the ball 16.0 is not the problem.  Throwing it at that speed CONSISTENTLY has been.

I am 80% on 10 pins, which is pretty solid for a 1 day a week bowler looking to increase his participation in the sport.  When I am ready to take the next step, I will be sure to come back for advice on lessons and a coach.

Reijn,

No offense taken. But without good information a ball recommendation is impossible to suggest example: rev rate, axis, layout on the current ball, normal ball speed ...etc. You might consider putting this information into your profile so we can look it up when we want to respond to your questions and requests.

The best anyone can tell you with the limited information is what balls are generally more or less robust then the one you are throwing. And this information can be obtained in many lists.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.  I decided on and purchased a Sauce and will be getting a Psycho in a couple of weeks.

Since our house tends to be flooded, I went with the Sauce first, and will have it drilled for heavy oil.  The Psycho will be for medium to heavy.  Ball 3 has yet to be decided, but I am leaning towards the Emerald Vibe for light oil.

Due to the positive reviews, I ordered it through Buddie's Pro Shop (free shipping), which turned out to be cheaper than Bowler's Paradise (charges shipping).

Rolled the Sauce for the first time last night.

220 and 222 the first two games.  Had to switch over to my TKO in the 3rd frame of the 3rd game when the lanes broke down for a 180.  But that is exactly why I needed a new ball, for those options.

Thanks again for all your help.
