Need a ball that carries really well
« on: December 02, 2004, 11:43:09 AM »
Right now I am using a Columbia ICON 300.  This ball reacts way too much for my medium-low rev hook style.  It requires a big angle coming in to the pocket for a strike or else I get 10 pin after 10 pin because it just doesn't carry well either.
Can anyone recommend a ball that is forgiving and carries really well.  Thanks.

You would do yourself a great favor by adding a profile to your screen name so we would be able to gleen a bit mre information about you. That being said and knowing almost nothing about your game or what you bowl on, I would suggest one of the following which seem to work well for me or in some of my leagues:

  • Big Blue Pearl
  • Yeah Baby!
  • Absolute Power
  • Mutant
  • ***Anything but an ICON 300

Good luck in your quest to find a better ball.

The Icon300 is a heavy oil ball (a solid particle) and you're probably not facing such an oil pattern/condition. Unless you intend to save this ball for such heavy oils, try asking your pro shop to put a LIGHT polish on it. It will get better length and will probably hit harder, since it's conserving more energy.

If you'd like to stick with Columbia, try a solid resin ball instead of a particle, like a Shock or a Detour. The Shock will handle more oil since it comes dull; the Detour will go longer naturally with more apparent backend. Both are a step down from the Icon300.

Super Charge, without a doubt.  BOTH of them I've had hit a lot harder than other stuff I've had.  With only owning one, it's hard to say that all will do the same, but to have two of the same ball and both of them doing the exact same thing, that's got to be more than coincedence.

uh, i understood that all model balls carry well, it's just a matter of matching the cover/drilling with the lane pattern.

i would reccomend any one of the infernos.......  it will depend on the oil pattern and what type of hook you want as to what one to choose...  i have thrown them all and i can tell you that from what i have seen from my own expierences as well as watching other people these balls caeey really really well..... i know i have carried strikes with the inferno that i know wouldnt carry with anything else.........  so i say try one of them

airman, if you bowl in a house that has a pro shop with a good driller, have him watch you toss a few and let him make a suggestion as to what would work well for your game knowing the codntion you are bowling on.

It never ceases to amuse me when someone will post a question as to which ball they should get, only to have umpteen different suggestions.  How then, is the poster to know which one of those multiple choices to choose?

I have to agree with sawbones, find a pro shop that will watch you throw some.  I just got a new ball where I had that done, it was my first time ever having a ball & layout selected for me & the condition I bowl on most frequently.  I love the ball, & have been bowling out of my mind.  If it matches well to you & your style, I'd recommend the Classic Zone from Brunswick.  If your pro shop guy won't watch you throw, find one who will, and who knows the house you bowl in.  I really can't stress how important it is to have a proper layout & ball for your style.  Of course fit is first, then comes layout & selection.

P.S. I had an Icon 300, & hated it, it was no stronger than my reactives no   matter what I did to it, I don't classify it as a heavy oil ball, more medium oil.
Good Luck!
