Need a bit of help...
« on: January 03, 2005, 12:12:21 AM »
Yet again, I come to you for help.

I recently had my PAP measured and found that I was 6 1/4" over. This equates to forward roll, which equates to all of my equipment moving too early. I need to find equipment with weak coverstocks so I can get more length out of the ball. Can you guys list some balls with weak coverstocks so I know what is out there?? I dont know coverstocks too well, so I dont really know what is weak. Please help!!

I agree with you inverted1. My coach has taught me different hand positions, but none of which I can actually perform successfully. I have a real hard time changing hand positions and getting more side roll. I have gone to the lanes many times in the past few weeks to practice this and have not been successful in doing so. I am going to continue to practice the hand positions because it will make me more versatile in the long run, but for now I need some weaker equipment.

Look at Roto-Grips Sonic Boom and Ultra Sonic.
Good luck with your choice.

In response to Charlest, I just recently purchased a Scamp, drilled it to go long and for control. Also put the coverstock to 2000 plus 3 coats of polish and this ball reads and hooks ALOT!! I was swinging the lane yesterday with the ball. I am really looking for something that I can play up the boards with. I cannot do that with my Scamp.

Don't discount the Dynothane Barrage my friend, you got the chance to see what that ball can do yesterday on those lanes..great control ball for the down and in bowler.

I would really look towards some older equipment!  Check back in the early 90's.  I recently found a bright yellow Sun Storm that works wonders on the dryer lane conditions.  The covers are weak enough to allow the ball to clear the heads, but still give you a little reaction on the backend...  browsing through eBay today, I saw there was an original 15lb triton heat listed for sale.  This ball would likely work very well for you.

Good luck!

Matt,

I priced the Barrage already and am thinking of getting one. I am just feeling out the other options at this point.

There are always options.

If you're sure you did that correctly, I'd forget most of the other resin balls that I and others have listed and start looking at some of those pearl urethanes:
- Slate Blue Gargoyle,
- Trooper.

Either that or
- pick up your speed
- learn some alternative hand positions (very important),
- bowl where there's some oil.
- cut down your rev rate.

Also look to place the pin above the bridge and maybe to the negative side of the middle finger, near or in your track.

Well, I think the Scamp starts up sooner because of the particle that is in the coverstock.

As for other options, I have been working on my ball speed and as mentioned above, have had little success with adapting to new hand positions.

I just ordered a Barrage and may actually use the drill that you suggested, if that doesnt work, maybe a pearl urethane is in order. We'll see.

I did see MSC2471 throw a Barrage yesterday and it is exactly what I would like to get out of a ball. His reaction was long, smooth and controllable. I will probably drill mine much weaker with the pin high for length and cg placement for arc. I will let you know when I get it.
