I am not a qualified bowling coach or anything close to it but my pastor and team-mate has asked for my advice on improving his game. He is still a relative novice so I am just trying to show him the basics of good timing, free armswing, follow-through, etc. At this point, however, his biggest problem is he drops his right shoulder so low and leans forward so much at the line that he cannot get any sense of proper balance and is unable to follow through the ball with his arm. When he does it's a low chicken-wing. After watching him bowl again tonight I realized that his trailing leg is sweeping extremely to the left (which is okay for a lot of bowlers) but in his case this seems to be the reason his right shoulder dips so very low and he throws off-balance. I suggested he try not sweeping his back leg so much and try to bowl straighter-up but so far he is unable to undo what his muscles have instinctively learned. Does anyone have a suggestion for a drill he could perform that may help him reduce this tendency? For instance....Do I take him up to the foul line and have him kneel his left knee on a towel in a simulated bowling position with his trailing leg right behind him and then have him swing his arm a couple of times and throw the ball? I want to show him a drill that he can repeat that will give him the feel of what he should be trying to achieve. Any ideas from any coaches or would-be coaches out there? I appreciate your help!
