How much difference between a 15lb and 14lb?
« on: September 10, 2007, 06:35:40 AM »
I had a back injury last January and haven't bowled until last week.  At the time of my injury I had just gotten a Hammer Toxic.  I thought this would be the best choice because of how I threw it, and how much hand I put on it.  Well, 8months later I tried league again.  Back isn't fully healed up, but it didn't hurt any more after bowling a few games.  If I were to switch to a 14lb ball, would that make much of a difference?  I'm thinking les wear and tear from a little bit lighter ball, and then maybe I could get more on it also.  Any suggestions would be great.  Thanks.

When I went down from 16 to 15, I noticed an increase in hook, but not much else, depending on how free your swing is, you might see timing issues, or an increased swing speed. Difference in hitting power is negligible between 14 and 15, more so with modern core/coverstock combinations. It should reduce the stress on your body though, so no harm in trying it.

You'll get better results with a ball that's comfortable and easy to throw than one that's too heavy and that puts too much strain on your body and joints.  As AB said, hit and carry is good from 14# to 16#.

Better to be comfortable and able to keep bowling than uncomfortable sitting on the bench.

Personally, I see an increase in light hit carry with 16 lbs versus 15 lbs.
I'm a lower speed bowler, 15 MPH @ Pins, so that may have something to do with it.

If you can throw heavier weight, do it, its more force directed at the pins, period.

Ron Clifton has an excellent article pertaining to this subject on his web site.  www.bowl4fun.com  I think he sums it up perfectly.

Well I have been throwing 14 lb equipment for the past 3 years.  I have held the 5th highest average in the house for the past 2.  So to me I don't believe there is much change with 14lb.  I would agree with the fact of 15 kicking the coners out.  The biggest thing I have ever noticed is with ball comanpies when you get to 14lb equipment they tend to raise the RG and lower the differential.  Only problem this has created for me over the past couple years is finding a good heavy oil ball.

Hope this helps..
