Need advice on lane play strategy
« on: January 22, 2018, 08:40:52 AM »
I found myself in a situation that comes up all too often with the guys I bowl with.

We were in a tournament on 45 ft pattern with a big concentration on center and out of bounds outside 7.  I elected to play the shot more direct, going up 9 with a smooth rolling solid and had an excellent look.  I have a rev rate of 400RPM and get around the side of the ball, so my goal is to control the backend reaction as to not get too sideways and let the pattern develop.

My team mates are bigger handed, and cannot or refuse to play straighter until the shot dictates a move. They will go thru their bag until they find something that gives them a workable look and go from there.

My problem is when I need to move in, i am moving right into their tracks and am forced to go fishing for a look since the first move in usually hooks way to early since they have worn out that spot.  I have made initial moves of 7 boards before but its a guessing game and it effects my confidence and consistency.

I guess I could move in initially but I do not want to go 2-10, 10 pin, washout and every other designer leave that occurs when forcing something that I feel is not there.

Any advice for a confused bowler?

Personally, I think there are a good amount of people that try to play straight too long. When you move inside do you also change balls since you're moving into an area that's already being played?

You have more hand than me and probably get around the side more, when I move inside more where others are playing I have to ball up to my strongest ball that digs more so I don't get a jumpy reaction

This doesn't sound as much an individual lane play strategy as it is a team lane play strategy.  Depending on how serious the team is can/will dictate where you will play.

If someone finds a great look in an unexpected area of the lane, others may want to experiment there also, at least one shot.  But if it is only one person who can hit that shot, then either play together elsewhere or fight the transition.

Fighting over/under on the fresh is a given at times.  But it should be the entirety of the set that should be judged and not just the first half of the first game for one or two bowlers.  My suggestion is to play as a team with a goal of developing the shot for all bowlers instead of being the lone guy in a different area.

Agree with all of this, WHEN the team is capable of working together. Many teams simply aren’t talented enough to pull it off. Talented in this case isn’t the ability to throw a pretty strike ball, it’s the ability to be versatile enough to play anywhere. It sounds like OPs team isn’t going to play well as a team.

That leaves one option, and I think the OP already knows it. Learn to watch where they’re playing and either jump them completely or prepare to shell down. Sounds like you already do all of that, so there’s no secret here. Experience bowling with that team is the only answer.

Nothing wrong with bowling tournaments for fun.  Do the best you can and enjoy the camaraderie.

If you (and even the rest of the team) desire to do better, then I would suggest developing a method to use each member's skills to better the entire team.  This could include changing the order, forcing bowlers to play out of the comfort zone for a while to even forming a new team.  No one likes the last one, but if four members a serious and one isn't, then perhaps a change is in order.

This is the bane of straighter players.  Best strategy is to make a pretty big move when necessary.  Us seniors get caught in this situation all the time when we have to cross with the kids
