Need advise on the 10 pin.

What kind of adjustments do you guys make when you throw a good shot and the 10 pin stands.  Some people suggest moving back on the approach.  It seems to improve my carry when I move up on the approach.  A 10 pin every now and then does not bother me, but some games it seems like every shot.

my "advice" on a 10 pin as follows( this assumes you know you threw a good shot ):

1) ringing 10....the kind where the 6 pin flies around the 10 pin. this is usually caused by the incorrect angle of entry or too much ball speed. although a bad rack can also cause this as well. i don't make an adjustment on these unless i start to leave more than, say, 3 or 4 a game. ringing 10's are part of the game. when one round object collides with another round object this is bound to happen. my adjustment for too many ringing 10's is a 1/2 board move to the right on the approach.

2) flat 10.....again i'll try a 1/2 board move to the right on the approach.

For me it depends on watching what the ball is doing at the breakpoint and how it's hitting the pocket.

If the ball looks like it's going a touch long or my angle to the pocket seems "flat" I'll move a board right with my feet.

If it's a good shot and I think the angle should carry I'll move a board left with my feet. With today's strong equipment I figure the ball is slightly burning off enough energy(but not rolling out) to lose carry. Moving left to catch a little more oil lets the ball save it's energy so it can carry.

I'd say within the last 5 years moving left for me seems to work 75%+ of the time. Before then I rarely moved left to improve carry. It was always a move right. If I'm leaving more than one 10 pin in a 3-4 frame stretch I'm making these minor adjustments.

when i leave a flat 7 im replaying the shot in my head to find out if it was a great shot, or just good enough to hit the pocket.  if great shot, i move half a board as well to the left.  same for ringing 7's.

More options not already mentioned:

  • Get softer with the release

  • Finger dancing: Ring10 index finger in, Flat10 index finger out

  • Purposely adjust to a lighter hit, usually when nothing else is working
