Need brainstorming for new league!
« on: January 26, 2010, 12:06:38 AM »
Okay, I need some input from everyone and anyone on here.  We are leaving our 40 team league next year because everything about it is ridiculous. Pots are only $100, lineage is too high and even drinks are too expensive.  Payoff for first place last year was $400 with lineage at $20, its not a money league but 40 teams and getting half of your money back is not worthwhile (Yes, all finances were accounted for last year, we looked into it.) There are many things that half of the league is not happy with, not to drag on...

So, we are forming a league at a more bowling friendly center, rather than this commercial house we are currently in.  My questions to you is what are some ideas you have to draw people in, obviously Michigan has a tough economy.  The new house is generously paying for our banquet, giving us very cheap drink specials, taking care of all secretary duties and fees, a more than reasonable lineage and adding a couple thousand to prize fund.

We know the guy in the pro shop too, so if anyone has any ideas on what to attract bowlers, please, please let me know! It is geared to be a fun/competitive league, more of a moderate league, by no means a classic league. We have guys from 170 to 230.

i.e. – Jackpots, first place prize guaranteed, brackets, strike ball, flyers or advertisements, lane conditions, league formats (7 or 10 point systems) please help with specifics! I have ran leagues so I have some experience, but please express your thoughts on what you would like to see.

THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE, I will let you know our results in September!

This has worked in our Mixed League ( 4 - any combo, no more than 3 men p/team ) and the format helps to keep teams interested all year thru.

Our league is setup as a split season with a combined overall.  Teams must bowl all 36 weeks to be eligible for prize monies.  Weeks 1-16 consist of season 1, weeks 16-32 are season 2. Season 1 & 2 are combined and the last 4 weeks (weeks 32-36) are bowled as position to determine league champion.  Our prize funds are paid out in a 25% - 25% -50% increments of the overall prize money for each season, rewarding teams that were most consistent.  All monies are paid at end of season.  Depending on strength of league, you may bowl match point w/ handicap as we do.

They will be 5 man or women teams, a split season of 33 weeks. 16 Weeks each half, and a roll-off final week along with doubles.

I am thinking a 30 point system (5 points a game for one on one matches= 15, 3 points for winning a games= 9 and 6 points for winning totals! Or a 10 point system 2-2-2-4 Totals.

We will pay by spot not by total points on year.

Just a few questions:

For current league: How many members per team?  How much is lineage, and how much is secretary/treasurer fee?

I'm having a hard time making your numbers make any sense - unless you have a really flat payout for all the teams.

I'll give you actual numbers from our league (24, 5 member teams):

$20 weekly dues

$11.95 lineage
$0.60 secretary/treasurer fees
$0.70 is designated for weekly awards
$6.75 per bowler per night for the approved end of season prize fund.

We have a total prize fund of $29k.  1st place is $4k ($800 per person). There is $1k drop off for 2nd and 3rd, then they drop off $500 and $250 (team) for 4th and 5th, then after that it's basically a $50 drop off for each lower place.  Last place (24th) is $325 ($65 per person).

I thought the payout was a little low - you're paying in $700.  The 1st place team will not get much more than their money back.

It was actually the fairest prize fund submitted.  In the league I bowled previously, they were very top heavy - we're talking $7-8k for 1st and down to $100-150 for last (lucky to get 1 week of dues back!).  Both leagues are mixed "fun" leagues.

Either way, sounds like you are getting a good deal if the house will take care of secretary duties and fees AND kick in a couple thousand extra to the prize fund.  Hopefully it will work out well for you guys.

Are you bringing the entire 40 team league to the new house, or are just a few teams leaving and hoping to start a new league?  With a 40 team league, I can't imagine you need to attract more bowlers.

Our pay out is very flat, based upon total points that system is very bad for a league.  Last year the team with most points had like 130's and the least was like in the 80's. So at $10 a point with a 50 point difference that is a $500 difference from 1st to 40th place, which is only $100 a man. So we got like $400 a guy and last was like $280!!!! OUT OF 40 TEAMS!

What we did to grow our league was sell tickets during league weeks.

Tickets used to be 5 for $1, then we went to 3 for $1, now 1 for $1.  In addition you, for every $1 you buy you receive 1 ticket for the last night drawing.

Each week, all the money sold goes into the pot and that weeks tickets are drawn for $20 strike tickets.  Strike you win $20, miss and the money carries over to the last night drawing.  We have 16 five member teams.  Each week we sell $800-$1000 in tickets.  40-50 $20 shots each week.  Normal week - approx 55% of tickets drawn are won.  So we carry over $400 each week to the last night drawing:
$400 X 35 weeks = $14,000 available in the last night drawing. (it will end up being more as the $$$ spent grows towards the end of the year).

End of the year drawing....  Shots start at $50 and go up.  names are drawn from the "extra" ticket you received for every $1 you bought during the year.  Strike you win the amount.  Miss, draw another name.

Last year we had over $12,000 in the last night drawing and the shots were something like this:

40 @ $50
30 @ 100
15 @ 250
 6 @ 500
 2 @1000

Teams will pool their money and other buy as individuals.  First year we did it, we had 8 teams, and had a little of 5,000 in last night fund.

One team last year won $2,200 in addition to their prize money, and one team missed over $1800 in shots.  Makes for a fun final night.

I am the secretary of the league TXBOWLER is talking about. The first change we made several years back was to take a percentage of the prize fund and have a second chance tournament the last night. That is now 25% of the prize fund. Prior to that change we might have half of the bowlers show up and bowl on the sweeper night after that change everyone gets an additional payout and everyone bowls. Then the big change, the strike shots. Not only have we grown to 15 or 16 teams per year the last two years (this is a 16 lane center), the quality of bowler has gone up as well. Out of 80 bowlers I would guess that some weeks we may be have 1/4 of the bowlers have PBA cards, regional players normally, but several are guys with titles on their resume and a former PBA rookie of the year and other local tour guys have graced our establishment at times. That total strike fund may get up over 15K this year and we actually have 15 teams this year. It adds excitement each week, but that last night and seeing guys walk up to throw one strike for $1000, well no pressure there. It does take a person to set and run the tickets each week and we give our person a small compensation, but it is worth it for the league and bowlers.

I'm assuming you guys vote on the prize funds?

We have at least 3 to choose from.  My previous league basically gave 3 choices and all were top heavy - only differences basically being the team and individual awards (high games, sets, averages, etc).

I believe the current league gave us 4 or 5, we voted to get to the top 3, and then voted again.

You could always volunteer your own prize fund and see if anybody likes it.

My previous league didn't care - people were happy just to bowl.  Even though it was a "fun" league, it was very competitive - you basically needed to have 5 bowlers with 200 averages to have a chance to win.  Nobody cared that the league secretary was making $3500 (or more) for the season, or that last place was only good for getting back 1 week of dues.

We used to have a similar strike jackpot, with a small addition.  You never threw out your dead tickets.  You kept them all year and then at the end of the year, at the banquet, tickets were drawn from all the tickets sold during the year for prizes [balls, bags, shoes, etc. all included] at the banquet.  The pro shop operator actually bowled in this league, but since you guys are in good with the pro shop, maybe it's something feasible.
