Need Feedback on Vacu Grips
« on: March 15, 2005, 03:21:22 AM »
Need feedback -- good or bad -- on vacu grips.

I'm switching back to regular grips.  For some strange reason, I find myself squeezing the ball so much in my backswing that it's putting pressure on my thumbnail, bruising it quite badly.  I've had my pitches and span checked against my other equipment, and they're the same.  Therefore, all things being equal, I (and my pro shop guy) decided it must be due to the vacu grips.  At first I thought they were too large, so we put in a smaller size, but it still didn't alleviate the problem.

I tried out Vacu-grips for about a week, and I hated them, but three of my buddies swear by them, and wouldn't have it any other way.  I just didn't like the feel of them at all.

I hated the feel of them. Just me. Just not as comfortable as regular grips.

Most of the guys who hang around the pro shop changed to Vacu Grips.  It gives you a snugger feel almost like they are too tight, but increases revs without question and some think its increased their ball speed. You get out of the ball easier then you think.

Its like drinking beer, smoking or sex for the first time: you have to do it for a while before you get comfortable with them.

Hey debs,

The customers I've done it for also like theirs.  Quick question, if you're squeezing your thumb, what does that have to do with your fingers?  I'd take a stab at that fact that the thumb is too loose allowing you to squeeze.  If your thumb hole is tight or snug, you really wouldn't have a lot of room to "squeeze".  Just a thought....

I use this technique on my ring finger, and love it. My ring finger used to swell up about halfway through the night, and by the middle of the 3rd game, I couldn't get it into the ball more than halfway. No problems since I switched.

Tenpinspro,

My thumbhole isn't too large (actually I keep it quite snug because of my propensity to squeeze).  It's the same size as the thumbholes in my other equipment.  I have an oval thumbhole drilled slightly larger to accommodate a Magic Carpet and 2 pieces of tape, because my thumb size fluctuates with the time of day, and I bowl in the morning in two of my leagues, when it's at its largest.  One of the posters wrote that the grips could end up causing too much reverse pitch, and I think that's the case.  My thumbnail doesn't bruise using my other equipment.

I even thought that maybe the thumbhole had too much bevel, but it actually has slightly less bevel than my Deuce.  The ball feels great until I get into my backswing, where I can actually feel pressure on the left corner of my thumb.  The bruising covers the entire thumbnail, even though I feel the pressure on only one part.
