Need help getting DAD a ball!
« on: July 19, 2004, 08:07:10 PM »
Well, my Dads B-day is almost here so I am trying to think which ball I should get him. He is currently using a Mojo and a Black Rhino. Rhino is for spares and dry and Mojo is for medium. He has a fairly low ball speed I think. Say low to medium maybe revs.... He sometimes has a problem with Mojo hooking too much which I think has a lot to do with ball speed. I would like to find him a ball betweeen these balls that will give him length( b/c of ball speed) and yet a tame, controllable backend reaction. All suggestions are welcome!!!

Thanks!

Kyle,

To begin with,
1. Would you/he want the ball to hook on the same amount of oil as a Mjoj, just to hook less, OR do you/he want a ball to hook in less oil so it fits between the Rhino and the Mojo?

2. And do you know how the Mojo is drilled?
It is a particle ball for medium-heavy oil, in general, but drilled strong-ish and used by lower rev bowler, it can easily handle medium oil.

There are lots of good balls that can fit into both categories.

Hey, Charlest

OK... 1) I want it to hook is less oil than Mojo but more than Rhino so like you said it would fit between the 2 balls.

2) The Pin is right of ring and half of the pin is above ring the other have is even with it. Does that make sense? The CG is is about an inch right of center of palm. I'd say its a little off so its not stacked. The mass bias is not marked but it would place mass bais somewhere around the thumb or even in the thumb.

LMK if this helps. Thanks.

Ok, so Dad has a simple 1:30, pin by ring finger - most generic drilling available.

There are many potential balls. The general class might be a solid resin, lightly polished, but there are a few pearl that might also fit in. I'll assume the driller will probably do the same drilling and there's nothing wrong with it, for 99% of us.

I would say try your best to get a 2-3" pin and a 2.5 - 3.5 oz top weight ball.
One again it's just a very safe specification and quite easy to get for most balls.

First ball that pops to mind is one we've bene talking about here for a while, the Track Crunchtime. He'll get easy length, a definite breakpoint and a controlled hook, with good power at the pins.

A solid resin I like a lot is the Brunswick Bruiser. The only proviso withthis ball, is he/you/the driller should take some of the polsih off; do NOT make it dull. Just take some of the high gloss shine off.

Another very good control ball, if you can get AMF, is the Valor/P Tour. It has a low RG, but very small RG differential for low flare. It is a pearl, but it has particles. So, it will hook, but the hook will be smooth and controllable. It should for him, who is probably a stroker, get a very nice reaction. "Should" being the operative word; no guarantees.

Three potential Storm balls are the Hot Wire, the new, Hot Rod Pro Stock, & the Razor Wire. The Hot WIre and the Razor are safer bets; I personally haven't seen enough of the Pro Stock to be definite about it. The HW and the RW will offer a sense of control and decent carry power without too much hook. Both are a definite step down from the Mojo. The Hot Wire has technically been discontinued but most pro shops shuld still stock a few and many might discount it. (These two might be 1/2 a notch less than the other ones I suggested in overall hooking ability and oil handling.)

Less readily available but still very good potential candidates are the
- Dyno-Thane Vendetta Black, and
- Roto-Grip Silver Streak solid.

The Columbia Detour might/should also fit into your needs, but I don't have enough experience with it to make a definite recommendation; others may feel more confidant that it will fit.

Thanks Charlest. I like the idea of getting hima Crunch Time. He wants a lighter weight so anyone selling a 15# Nib Crunch Times with good pins and top weights? How should he have it drilled? He needs a very controlled ball. LMK. Thanks.
