Need help understanding some things
« on: May 25, 2010, 02:38:43 AM »
Last night, I returned to leagues after 20 months.  Everything felt good once I calmed the nerves down, but the only ball that would move was my Epic Odyssey.  From what I've been told, the oil pattern was unusual for that house, and it forced me inside with a straight shot over 15 at the arrows...and hope it went to the pocket.

My natural shot is standing 2 boards right of center, sending the ball over the 6 board at the dots, and it works its way back from there.  Ball speed tends to run between 16.5 and 17.5mph, and I've been told I have medium revs (I'm not sure I fully understand what means either).

Before continuing, I should mention that all strike balls are 15 pounds, 3.1-3.2oz top weight, and pins are 2-3" out.  With the exception of one ball, all are drilled stacked leverage (to my understanding).  The primary difference between them is the lane conditions they were designed for.

My Odyssey started going brooklyn, but moving left to counter it put it in the heavier oil and it slid.  The fix was switching to my AMB Centaur, which became useless after 7 frames because of carrydown.  It was back to the Odyssey, and I managed to keep it close to the 1-3 pocket.

I started wondering how two balls that seemed similiar in terms of RG and Differential, and both drilled stacked leverage, could be that far off in reaction (AMB slid in carrydown, Odyssey moved 3-5 boards left at 45 feet).  When I got home, I stumbled on the Odyssey's box and found that her pin is 4.5-5" out.

Is the pin difference between the Odyssey and AMB that significant?  If so, should I consider switching to the 4.5-5" pin?

Finally, as I mentioned earlier one strike ball is not drilled like the others.  The pro shop driller suggested that my Purple Executioner be drilled "negative."  What does this mean (other than I tend to leave a lot of 7-pins with her)?

Balls with different coverstocks will not react the same with similar pin placements, They might be close, but never the same. Why dont you ask your pro shop guy, since he has seen you bowl.

That makes sense...I didn't think about the coverstock difference.  Unfortunately, I haven't bowled for awhile because we relocated.  I'm not familiar with anybody at this new house.

The pin length of a undrilled ball really doesnt matter as much as people would think. In terms of difference at the core from a 1" pin to a 3" pin, is less then 1/8 of an inch. This is does not affect the balls reaction. The layout and surface of the ball mean the most. You state the balls are drilled stacked leverage, this is nice to say but you must make sure they are drilled to the correct messurment from your PAP for this layout.

Sounds like you could move further right in this house with a weak ball(like the cheetah pattern) or try some surface on one of the balls you are using to move into the oil.
