South Point - Las Vegas
« on: May 17, 2010, 08:09:44 AM »
Greetings
My league is going to Vegas this weekend and we will be at the South Point lanes in Vegas, so how is the shot there at 12:00pm in the afternoon.
Thanks

Have you been to Vegas before?  The reason I ask is whether or not you knew that South Point is quite a good distance from the Strip and much further to down town.

The bowling center is beautiful and though I only bowled there once, I think us telling you what we see might hurt you in a tournament.  The house shot and the tournament might be different causing you to look for a shot that isn't there.  Also some peoples dry lane is someone else's oily lane.

Good luck bowling and at the tables.

South Point is on the strip--extended.  That is, it is on Las Vegas Blvd.,
just a couple miles south of other casinos.  The new "M" is even a little
south of that.    I agree with the above poster that the lane conditions
should not be expected, as I bowl there frequently and they are quite different
from time to time.  Also tournament conditions could be quite different.  The
only generalization that I have is that they seem to be mostly on the dry side.

I frequent the South Point at least once a year to bowl a tourney in late June (on there THS). Everytime I've bowled there the lanes have been on the drier side.  I traditional am a "down-and-in" type bowler and last June and this past January I bowled in tournaments there and they were just as dry as previous trips there. I use Lane Masters equipment and all I used was a Black Pearl Reactive (highly polished) and a spare ball, all my other equipment stayed in the bag.  Also, I noticed the last 3 times I've bowled there that there was quite a big bumper to bump it off the gutter and it also seemed that lanes 1-32 are drier than 33-64.  Again, just my opinion.

In January when I  bowled at the SouthPoint I also bowled at Red Rock in the Tournament of Champions Pro-Am (THS) and the lanes were dry there as well, I think it has to do with the area of the country.  Pretty much everywhere I've personally bowled there has been dry dating back to the old Showboat.

Pin carry is pretty good, I have a tendency to leave quite a few 10 pins on all types of hits there, the approaches are well maintained and the staff there is pretty good.  Mike Caverley (I think this is his last name)in the Pro-Shop is as top-notch as they come and is very knowledgable.  You won't be disappointed while there, don't forget to mention the South Point Pro Shop website and receive 15% off any purchase of $25 and up(*Does not include sales items).

Remember your mileage may vary based on your individual styles.  Also, the South Point is located on the Las Vegas Blvd just a hair under 6 miles west of Mandalay Bay.

Hope this helps,

Along with Mike Caverly (who is very good), the manager is Johnny Debennedetta
(sp) who is also very good.

Well, got back yesterday from the South Point and I bowled fairly well but of course it should have been better but thats bowling BUT the good news is I ordered
a new ball from the shop there from the manager Johnny Debennedetta.

Since my league was doing a sweeps there I figured I would drop by the shop and have a talk with the Pros there since I need a new driller and I have been hearing a lot of good things about Las Vegas' Pro shops.

so anyway, long story even longer, I ended up picking out a STORM "Hyroad" and since a 15lb'r wasn't end stock he will ship it out to me FREE OF CHARGE (whoo-hooo) after he gets 'em in this Tuesday and drills it for me...I'm freak'n stoked!!!!

What type of lane condition did you run into while bowling there?  Was my description close?

Hi Pat,
yup, you were spot on. Very, very, dry outside of the 10 board (I'm a righty) with some oil from 10 to 15 and a little more in the middle. On Friday afternoon the wife and I practiced at around 4:30pm and the shot was just sick,

of course we know how that would change during a league event so on the Friday practice I stood about 16 and just piped it up the 9/10 board with my Mega-Recovery and carried the world.

On the Saturday 12:00pm afternoon shot which was right after the 1st league the shot wasn't even close to the Friday shot. So it took me a few shots to line up after a ball change.

Being the stubborn knucklehead that I am it took about the first 3 frames to put away my dull Mega-Recovery (one of the best balls I have ever owned) and change to my polished C-System 2.5 and just threw that for all 3 games and just followed the oil...it was a blast.

I bowled just Ok though as I shot a 650 but with no handicap it didnt win me the $$$$ I was hoping for but I still managed to cash for a little over $300.00, it  should have been much more but I had a brain fart in the 3rd game a couple of times. All and all I really like the South Point and the Pro shop is excellent.
