need help with thumb pitch
« on: April 22, 2009, 02:10:53 PM »
currently i have my thumb pitched away half an inch with no lateral pitch. I have always had callauses on the left side of my thumb that wraps around the entire side of my thumb. I am left handed, so to be clear if u were to hold up ur left thumb so it is pointing up my callause is on the left side. my question is, only recently it has begun hurting, most likely because i switched my thumb to the half away, before it was o front to back with a 1/8 laterl out to the right. i changed because i could not clear the front of the ball no matter how much bevel i used. so my question is will increasing the latteral out pitch relief or add pressure to the left of my thumb.

I've always heard to change pitches an 1/8" at a time. 1/8 to 1/2 is nuts. You're probably squeezing the ball to hold on to it thus causing the callusing.

Yes, you made a huge jump and at least part of your problem is probably that you are squeezing the ball with the thumb.  I suggest you try 1/4 reverse and 1/8 right lateral.  It would be helpful to know your spans.  --  JohnP

I think everyone who bowls regularly gets at least some callousing.

I just use my old disposable razors to shave them down.  Just go over the callous lightly over and over, occasionally knocking the dead skin out from between the blades.  The razor will only shave off the dead, dried up callous and won't harm your healthy skin.

Just make sure you don't shave it too much or it will be a little tender, also be careful of moving the razor sideways or snagging it on your cuticle.

I think you'll be really happy with the result and it shouldn't hurt anymore.

how long is your span... from 0 to 1/2 seems excessive.. you could be squeezing now .. that could be causing some of your problems
Do you have a longer than average thumb ??

I would think you might need that right lateral.  It would get the ball off the side of your thumb and more on the flat part..
Do the coke bottle test.  quickly grab the thicker part of your wrist.  To what finger does your thumb point.

1/2 reverse is quite a bit.  More than likely squeezing it because of the excess pitch.  Anytime you develope a callous in order to get rid of it you need to pitch in that direction or relieve grip pressure. (shorten span, less reverse) Also keep in mind when you change pitches there is a possibility you will have to change your span, like shorten in your case when cutting down reverse pitch.

I shortend my span and went with less reverse this year and it did cause some discomfort and bruising for a while on the same spot on my thumb as you.. this was cause the shorter span and pitch change made it so that side of my thumb is almost pointing straight up toward the finger holes.. so the ball weight was on a differnt part of my thumb.. it has gone away now and I don't notice anything bad anymore..

here is my span, cut to cut i am 4 5/8 to the middle finger and 4 11/16 to the ring. full i am 5 to my ring and 4 15/16 to the middle, and yes my thumb is very long compared to most people.

sounds like you are similar to me.. 1/2 is kind of excessive but that is where I was at..
make sure you aren't squeezing .. see if that relieves some of the pain and damage..
or like I said.. just see if you get used to it and the pain goes away once a good callus has formed..
you may need that lateral though to get the weight more on the flat of your thumb

based upon what you said, when your thumb is in the ball it would be the inside of your thumb that is getting the callous, you should probably have some lateral out, IE pitched right for a lefty, the big jump to the reverse is probably making you squeeze and your 0 or lateral under is causing your thumb ro rub on the way out
