ball plug cracking
«
on:
August 02, 2007, 05:44:27 PM »
How come when ever i pour ball plug when it hardens, it either cracks or won't completley bond with the edge of the whole being plugged?
I try to drill the hole a size bigger to remove the bevel.
I don't think i am using to much hardner
The shop is in a controlled temperature
What could be the problem?

You could also be stirring it too long, although that is not as likely as not having the correct hardener/resin ratio. My guess would still be that it is the ratio, because it is fairly easy for something to go wrong in that department.

Are you filling the hole with cubes of hardened ball plug? Using these cubes cuts back on waste and they help absorb heat created during the curing process which helps avoid cracking.

Check your pumps for air bubbles, that can mess up your ratio. Ive learnt the hard way with shrinkage, all thumbs get done 1/2 and 1/2 now, even ones where i havent drilled out slugs/switch grips

Might check and see if you have a bad/old batch of plug materialor hardener.
Happened here hardener was bad,got a fresh batch and was fixed.

I've always been told to hit the hole with the sander briefly to get a nice clean surface for the plug to bond to. That doesn't explain the cracking but perhaps will help with the bonding issue.

I'd guess your pumps are worn and not delivering the proper amount of either resin or hardener. Try mixing some plug by using measuring spoons. Use the proper ratio, most are 3 parts resin to 1 part hardener. So you could use 6 tablespoons of resin to 2 tablespoons of hardener or any other volumes that give the 3 to 1 ratio. If that plug sets up OK, throw away your pumps and get new ones. Or just continue the measuring spoon method. -- JohnP

I've had these problems years ago with everyone's plug. I tried Lane Concepts 1-Step ball plug and have no problems plugging up to 1 3/8 in 1 step. You need to make sure your ratios are PERFECT! Also make sure the holes are well cleaned as oil may cause this as well in certain plugs.
