Pot Games and your Mental Game...
« on: March 09, 2009, 12:33:25 AM »
It has been said that Patrick Allen, one of the best bowlers on tour, bowled pot games daily to keep his mental game sharp...This "strike now or lose" mentality has been used to his advantage and has produced excellent results...

Do you think this approach works and can it improve your personal mental game?

I pot bowl every chance I get be it for 5 bucks or 50, your money on the line makes for an entirely different game

I can go 525 in league and come out and shoot 750's for 3 pot bowling

We have been shooting pot games for a couple of seasons now.  We have a lot of fun, trash talking.  I think it definitely does help with the mental.   There are times that i struggled during league and come out to shoot pot games after and shoot quite well.  Matters of fact, im shooting some tonight.  Going to win some lunch money.

In my neck of the woods, if that happens you get called a sandbagger for the rest of the year, and most of the next lol

I usually do well when I enter for pot games in our traveling league, but my buddies only bowl worse. I have several 300's, they have 1 between the three of them.

I would have to vote for there being a relation to bowling well when in pot games and doing well under pressure..

There are far too many differences between pot games and league play for you to be considered a sandbagger for doing better in pot games. Just to name a few:

-The play in pot games is much quicker which allows you to maintain a good tempo.

-There is none of the BS happening between shots like in league arguments, card                         games, tons of time to stew about last shot, etc. There is trash talking, but it's great to have so much fun while bowling and win some money on the spot.

-Massive amounts of alcohol consumed, most people I know don't drink any if at all during pot games. A little different on league night.

-As mentioned the amount of focus paid to your game and each shot is ten fold compared to league play. This allows you to remain in the zone for the whole game not in and out of it like in league.

I for one can only hope to bowl as well during league as I do in pot games, tournaments, and pro-ams. Just a total different atmosphere.
