Need some answers about Pearl balls
« on: June 25, 2010, 07:52:27 AM »
Well I started bowling in ABT and it mostly flat patterns. Well with it being flat and more oil I got an Invasion thinking it would be good for it. I had it drilled strong thinking that is what I needed. Well the Invasion didn't hook much at all.

In the last tourney til fall I started with my Invasion and it didn't move at all. So I grabbed my Reign and it hooking great. Is it possible that I should just use pearl bowling balls or is there pearl heavy oil balls? My stats are 16 - 16.5, 345 revs and little axis.

me personally, I almost never pearl equipment on fresh flat patterns.  They carry the oil down so fast and make the shot ubber tight.  I tend to go with the medium to medium-high diff solids to control the breakpoint until the shot opens up.

You can sand a pearl to 2000 abralon to help it bite in heavier oil. The invasion on a flat pattern makes sense, but it still needs a lot of volume. Just because a pattern is flat doesn''''t mean there''''s a lot of oil out there. My guess is the invasion wasn''''t hooking because it was burning up before it even got a chance to move. If you have plenty of volume, a strong solid with some surface will be the best bet. Pearls are good to use when there''''s less volume and/or less head oil as they usually get down the lane easier. There is a such thing as a strong pearl though, Mutant Cell Pearl, Bounty Hunter Pearl, Time Bomb, Curve, Prodigy, etc.

I even thought of polishing the Invasion to see if that would help. The other guy that was on the pair with me was using and Invasion also and it just hooked all day for him. We were close in speed and rev also.

With my new balls that I am getting I am not going to have any of them drilled strong just to see if that helps out. It just gets annoying watching someone use the same ball as myself and it just works great.

Although pearlized reactive balls weren't meant for oiler lane conditions they can be scuffed to go into an earlier roll for when the lanes are slicker. Pearlized reactive balls were basically designed for more of a skid/flip reaction.

When you say little axis, do you mean tilt?  little to no tilt means you need the ball to retain its energy for a good skid-hook-roll phase.  Polishing the Invasion would be the quickest, and cheapest way to help it retain more energy.

The next alternative is to plug and redrill weaker or go with lower end equipment.  IMO, the best thing to do, though time consuming is to increase your tilt(open the hand up some).  Until recently, I could really only use low end equipment on any pattern, even the PBAX patterns.

One night recently messing around, I tried a few shots with my hand "broken" instead of the moderate cup I used to do.  I immediately was able to move 10 boards right because of the increase of skid.  The midlane read and back end were not sacrificed. Try it in practice one day.

Lastly, keep in mind that you still have to follow through or it will do nothing but skid.

Oh, the question about pearls.  I for one love pearls, and some of them are quite strong.  The prodigy for one is an extremely aggressive pearl that is stronger front to back for me than the Gravity.

Xcessive_Evil - I will make sure it is axis tilt when I go to the pro shop tomorrow as he is the one that noticed that I didn't have much at all. He taped me and he said it was less than 5 degrees or something like that. He said that I was similar to Pete Weber but less revs with the axis. I am going to take in the Invasion and get it polished and see what that does.

The polish should help. I had the same problem with my original Jigsaw. Out of the box it is slightly dull and for me it grabbed early and was flat on the backends. Our house shot on average is medium oil. When I added polish to it, the ball became a hooking beast. Much cleaner through the fronts then really started to grab and hook on the backends.

For me, most bowling balls that are dull out of the box don't roll well for me. I usually adjust the surface with a little polish to get it through the heads and pickup on the backends. I have also taken a little surface to pearlized balls to help get them into a roll a little sooner on oilier lanes.

With your rev rate the one thing you usually don't want is an aggressive ball drilled too aggressive. It can cause the ball to burn up all of its energy and do nothing.(been there done that)

On average I fond myself using mostly pearlized bowling balls for the usually house shot I face and most tournaments. I also take a variety just incase.

Polish on a fresh sport pattern isn't a good idea imo.  If a ball is too strong and you need to use polish on it, you should ball down to a weaker cover.  Even on shorter patterns, I usually use 1000-2000 grit on the fresh.  It helps open the pattern up, then you can move left with your shiny stuff and open them up.  If you use shiny stuff right of the bat, it can make the lanes harder instead of easier as you bowl more games.  Just a thought

Agreed with above post. Says it all.

A lot of variables factor into why your Invasion didn't make the corner. On a flatter pattern sometimes a more aggressive ball isn't always the answer. Also, playing a line that has huge out isn't the answer either. Straighter is greater on flatter patterns. What your ball does when exiting the oil and encountering dry/friction is completely different than what we commonly see and expect from a THS.

Sure you could polish your Invasion to tame it down and allow you to play on more medium volume patterns, but why did you initially get the invasion? Possibly for heavier volume patterns? If so, I say leave it as OOB and look into getting a mid line ball something of a bench mark type ball. A  Reign of Fire would complement your Reign just fine.

Sorry for the long post, but just wanted to share my thoughts.

Thanks everyone for the input. I need all the help I can get. I do think now that I got the Invasion drilled too strong. Lesson learned there. Usually I start with my Invasion and play right up 2nd arrow then move as I need to. Even from there the Invasion wasn't doing anything.

Right now I have only 7 events that I have bowled with the ABT,so I am still learning about the flat patterns they use. It just made me wonder why I could use my Reign and play the same line and it would go Brooklyn when my Invasion would barely make it to the pocket.

themachine300 - The Reign is the weakest ball I have at this time. Is there anything you would suggest. I am going to have the new Hammer balls when they come out which should give me more of a range to select from. I also thought about making up a tourney arsenal also.

With each event I bowl I am learning and it is making my regular league easier but so far I am getting good at donating to the winner of the ABT events as I shoot horrible in it.

The Reign is your weakest?  Unless you are a master of hand positions/releases or always on true heavy oil, you are limiting yourself as the Reign overall is no weak ball by any means.

If you are trying to stay storm/roto specific,  the Nomad Pearl, Fast/Furious(1st), Riot, Darkstar, Mars, Natural/Grenade are good choices to go to if the Reign becomes too much.

X thanks for the comment on the roto balls. Slipped my mind. Nomads are looking really nice and had a chance to see the riot and dark star recently. Wow! really smooth. Didn't know how these would be able to replace the mars and pluto, but Roto has definitely made it easy to complete an arsenal if one wants to stay with just roto.

jmattox, on second thought, you might look into getting the riot dark star combo. Can you say smoooootthh!!! Would look great on a THS as well as fit in nice on some of the sport patterns as good control type pieces. Don't think you would be disappointed. Also, the nomads are great if you want something a bit more aggressive.

Too many good balls out there right now. Don't think you will be disappointed with much of anything out.

Thanks everyone for the answers. Knew that I could get some answers on here. I actually threw one of the Nomad at a Storm demo and like the reaction that I was getting with it.

Do you know what surface the invasion was at when you threw it in the tournament you're referencing in your OP?

Pearl or not, the Reign is polished, so it will lose little energy through the heads (as will essentially any ball that is polished).

It sounds to me like your invasion is dull and like tywithay said, it's probably burning up a lot of energy in the heads, leaving nothing left for the back end...which means no backend reaction.
