Chitown is correct. Many bowlers are taught from an early age "when you miss right, move right". This helps when you have dry boards to the right (for righties), but on longer patterns, even those dry boards may not be enough to get the ball back to the pocket. Remember the further from the pocket you throw the ball, the more the ball must hook to make it back.
Long patterns take most bowlers out of their comfort zone and can eliminate that "free hook" to the outside.
Put your skid/snap balls away, grab something sanded. You want the ball to be rolling and ready to go when it runs off the back of the pattern, not something that is still skidding. Slower speeds and a more up-the-back style release also help.
