Finger pain????
« on: March 22, 2011, 12:56:49 AM »
Over the last 3 months or so I've started to experience some pain in my 2 bowling fingers.

It's mainly at the 1st knuckle.  Last year I shortened my span 1/4" to prevent some cracking

in my fingernails.

Over the last couple wks I've tried a larger size finger insert and the pain hasn't been quite

as bad.

Any other suggestions???

Maybe have your pitches checked...

If you are using lifts, you may have more pitch then needed...

Check pitches and span again. Also if you use power lifts the insert has a pitch in it already by how you finger goes into it as opposed to just pure ovals. This may cause you to not have as much reverse pitch in your fingers as needed.

I see a lot of balls drilled with finger pitches at zero.  For many players there is no way they can bend their fingers to 90 degrees all they get is finger pain and nail damage.  Even still many shops still drill the so called "standard drill" of 0,0 3/8 left and 3/8 right in the fingers and 3/8 reverse with 1/8 right lateral in the thumb regardless of span.  There is no way or very little chance that someone with a 3 1/2 span  and someone with a 4 7/8 span are going to have the same finger and thumb pitches.

I drilled a ball for a lady yesterday.  The one she was using had the finger pilot holes pitched 1/4 forward and she was using grips with built in forward, so the total was about 7/16 forward.  I checked her joint flexibility, the MF was about 45° and the RF about 30°.  No wonder her fingers were hurting!  I put her in RF - 3/8 rev and MF - 5/8 rev plus another 3/16 rev to offset the pitch in the grips.  When we went to the lanes to try it out her first comment was "It doesn't hurt.".  --  JohnP

JohnP,

When you fix something like that the WOW is worth it all....   I don't know how many people that drill bowling balls I've made mad.  The first thing that happens when the pain goes away is the customer goes to their old ball driller and let's them have it!  I've even watched those drillers try to justify their work at the same time.  What is weird is if they go back to the old driller at any time they still get the same old drill they had that caused the pain.  To me that is just plain lack of knowledge or not caring about their work.

The funniest thing is when I measure the customer I get " what are you doing????  No one has ever done this before.  All they do is stick my hand in a ball and crank the thing!"

I've heard that too.  Not to mention when we go to the lanes to measure the PAP location.  --  JohnP
