Need thoughts on a difficult lane condition
« on: September 10, 2009, 04:26:14 PM »
New 5 man league for me on wood lanes with above ground ball returns, historically known for heavy oil.  Everyone is throwing the latest hook in a box.  Bowling center reduced the amount of oil and apparently made the pattern much flatter.  I'm guessing on the "flatter" part, because league averages are off by 30-50 pins.

It seems like everyone starts between 12 and 18 swinging it out to 7-8.  The shot holds up about 5 frames and the outside line gets very wet-dry and the inside lines are torched.  The left lane is still playable moving further and further left, but I haven't found anything that works on the right lanes with the ball returns in the way.

Anyone have success on this type of condition?

take your hand out of it and "LOTS" of loft.. or you can try the suitcase release, going way outside and straight up th boards(almost a spinning reaction)..

*a guess from what you've described*

i have learned that when the lanes get tough you have to decide on how to tackle them. too much wet/dry then try to play straight with very little rotation.

this could help as you might see less of a change in direction.

i always say "just walter ray it"

If it is "flatter", than there is more oil than usual outside.  Move right and play up the boards.

Hard and straight seems like the plan.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Going hard and straight is going to require an increased level of accuracy to achieve the same carry.  Be sure you're mentally prepared for that requirement.

Heads are probably burnt, which is why they put out so much oil.  So you will have to take the heads out of play.  You can do that by lofting.  But you can also do that by using older equipment. And I would drill it to arc, no snap.  Older equipment (at least 10 years) and point it off the gutter.  Also don't target the arrows as a primary target.  Move your primary target further down the lane.  This too will help you clear the heads.
